Gracefully Force Consensus is an hour long split tape between PMM and Tuff Sherm. Two halves of the same whole or two independent artists? Or perhaps one works while the other sleeps?

On this cassette the artists trade tracks instead of the usual side each, PMM’s track titles appear to be lifted from a book on becoming a star while Tuff Sherm’s titles are all named after existing albums. Just how much is in the Tuff Sherm vault?

This tape is staggering in it’s breadth of sound, mood and approach: moments sound like disco 45’s having been given a sandpaper rubdown, other drumless works provide instant enlightenment. Tuff Sherm produces some of his most raw and rugged material so far taking the futuristic primitive approach to new levels of intensity by setting up huge mechanical automatons, lubricated with rain and sweat, that follow their own relentless path until a rainbow appears in the room. PMM resides in the chasm between music and non-music: gnarled tone poetry, metallic clangs and overblown keys.

Hill towns and empty mountains pass by, but the smoothness of the train blurs the view, and it’s easier than ever to fall asleep in the low morning sunlight coming in through the train’s windows. We’re sleeping, or staring out at the cities and landscapes; it’s easy to imagine the sound, and connect it with these events. There’s a contrast and connection between this reality and imagination. They’re separate, but happening simultaneously. On a walk through the crowded streets of Kyoto, or a half-asleep morning, what was it like? Later, what do you remember?

During a walk home one evening, I stopped on top of the street with a view over the train tracks, passed the intersection across from Mini Stop and the bakery, and went up the hill into the our neighborhood. There’s a particular sound when you step on the entrance grate by the doorway, and when opening the mailbox. Someday, I won’t be in these same places again, and for now, this is what they sound like. Even these minor moments are important when you look back on the memory, and then look out from this overlook, seeing the city lights blinking in the distance.

Given that his productions have found favour with the likes of Seth Troxler and Maya Jane Coles, Church label boss Seb Wildblood is clearly in the ascendency. This expansive EP is likely to enhance his rising reputation. Opener “Hunney” is something of an immersive deep house treat, with all manner of pleasingly melodious elements riding a shuffling, loose-limbed rhythm. “Come Into My House” is deeper and slower, with bluesy vocal samples and crackly breakdowns enhancing the glassy-eyed mood. “Warm”, meanwhile, is almost claustrophobic in its combination of suffocating chords, undulating grooves and tear-jerking melodies. As if that lot wasn’t enough to tingle the tastebuds, you’ll also find a trio of remixes, with Kommune1’s garage-deep house-techno fusion version of “Come Into My House” standing out.
