Produced by Russell Haswell** Russell Haswell joins Philip Best’s Consumer Electronics for the face-melting force of ‘Estuary Electronics’. Following on from the Mattin-produced ‘Crowd Pleaser’ (2009), it finds the pioneering duo at their most virile and vital across seven tracks rife with sputtering tech-n0!se and, of course, Best’s spray it, don’t say it delivery. It’s a cruel, vicious f**ker and therein lies its charm in showing up most of their field as dilettantes. Between the flatulent jag of ‘Teknon’ to the staggering, ‘floor bleaching force of ‘Co-opted’ or the ‘Air Lock’ monologue that seals the final side, it delivers visceral thrills in a way most others can’t compete with. Back on his regular haunt Black Acre, Fantastic Mr Fox has teamed up with Kid A and cooked up a catchy vocal track as unique as it is accessible. There is unabashed pop construction put into “You-Turn”, not least on the bombastic chord stabs of the chorus, but overall the production comes on like unhinged ’80s electro funk with an undercurrent of acid which lends itself to the curious, Bjork-esque croon of Kid A. Visionist steps up for a remix of the track that naturally leads off the beaten track into more curious corners of club music not dominated by commanding drums. Even without much prominent percussion the track charges forwards into an alien world full of intrigue and charm, like all of Visionist’s work.

Keeping things strictly Bristolian, Hotline Recordings steps up with its fifth belting release from the ever on-form Hodge, and it finds the energetic producer whipping up two very different kinds of stomper for the dance. “Mind Games” is brimming with ruffness, using chunky, metallic chimes to form the lead hook while the beats swing low and dirty with a whisper of UK funky in their bones. “Flashback” meanwhile takes a dreamier route thanks to its hypnotizing arpeggio, keeping the energy in the mix with a restrained but deadly kick thrum that should ensure this makes for an exciting diversion in more adventurous dances.

Although only a little over a year old, the Appian Sounds label has already featured a killer selection of artists across its four records so far, with the likes of Eduardo De La Calle and Ethyl & Flori appearing thus far. This latest various artists 12″ is perhaps the label’s most impressive to date, with the fluid deep house sound of Natan H’s “VX407” and deep, underwater acid of Leonid’s “Starling Dance” both offering some of the label’s most accomplished productions to date. The flipside sees a pair of underground legends join the Appian Sounds fray, as New Jersey’s Joey Anderson contributes “Dormancy”, which takes things into expectedly hypnotic territory thanks to its silky rhythm and effervescent synths, while New York’s DJ Spider provides “Anticipate The Wolves”, an enjoyably clunky piece of techno filled with ominously swelling sonics.
