Tricky is set to release new album ‘False Idols’ on May 28th.

One of the finest, most individual MCs to emerge from these Isles, Tricky’s ever unpredictable path has just taken a new turn. The Bristol rapper has signalled his intentions to release a new album, with ‘False Idols’ set to be released on May 28th.

Continuing his independent streak, Tricky has confirmed that the new album will be released on !k7 Records. Typically introspective, the rapper recently revealed that ‘False Idols’ is an attempt to re-focus.

“I was lost for ages,” he said. “I was trying to prove something to people, trying to do something to please other people and also myself at the same time, which is never going to work. To be honest with you, I’ve been floating around since Chris Blackwell and Island. My last two albums, I thought they were good, but I realize now they weren’t. This album is about me finding myself again.”

Continuing, Tricky compared the album to his classic debut LP. “Of all my records, the majority of people are into ‘Maxinequaye’… That’s because it was a time and a place. Maxinquaye was a part of their life. Some people say it was the soundtrack to their youth. You can’t challenge that. But musically this is a better album” he said, before adding: “Of course I know that people might not agree with that.”

The album is a promo containing occasional voiceovers, although they aren’t too prominent. It is a decent taster well in advance of the album’s official release.

Originally released spring 2012, Foamo’s monstrously heavy bass chugger “Sherlock” gets the treatment from a variety of talented players. Kry Wolf drop the tempo slightly for a resonant UKG strut, Taiki & Nulight continue the garage vibe with a more uptempo, menacing bass motif, Millions Like Us add some cinematic breakbeats and shivering synth washes to the mix, My Nu Leng take a leaf out of Bassbin Twin’s booty-bass book while LKid calms us down with a very neat, early 90s house version. A great spread and not a duff rub in sight.

Toyboy and Robin’s rather large recent bass-house smash “Jaded” gets the remix treatment here, with hyped up producers Amtrac and Village shuffling the parts and adding their own twist. Village’s version builds impressively, layering up elements – tipsy chords, the original’s woozy vocal, tasty pads – over a shuffling groove that’s deceptively heavy. Amtrac makes more of the vocal, beginning with a dash of cut-up acapella action before giving it pride of place over a touchy-feely, stripped back deep house-meets-garage groove. If anything, it’s even more instantly addictive than the original version, and that takes some doing.
