New Xosar 12″ featuring “The Calling” b/w “Rays Of Babylon”, big tip!

As 2013 rumbles on, Xosar is set to return with her third EP for Rush Hour, a sparkling two-tracker cloaked in her usual thick-set rhythms, heady vocal hooks and far-sighted synthesizers. In typical fashion, both “Rays of Babylon” and “The Calling” are blessed with a sense of playfulness and the emotion-rich, rush-inducing electronics that are fast becoming her calling card. “I’m inspired by musicians who can capture a feeling they experience in a particular moment, and let that emotion play itself out in the form of a melody, beat or masterful harmonious composition,” she says.

Both tracks started life as mainstays of Xosar’s acclaimed live sets, which are notably performed using various bits of hardware. “I originally created these tracks while I was living in sunny L.A,” she says. “I think the tracks are an accurate reflection of the fun, upbeat vibes I was immersed in while living there. When recording them, I hoped to transfer some of that happy, carefree desert dance energy onto the crowd.”

Although the tracks were later recreated on a computer (due, in part, to the producers fear of losing her Electribe SX sampler, which contained all the “skeletal patterns”), both “The Calling” and “Rays Of Babylon” are similar to the live version, and include elements created using an array of vintage synthesizers and drum machines. Arguably, the finished tracks – kaleidoscopic blasts of synthesized energy, hovering somewhere between classic techno futurism and addictive analogue house – are the most obviously thrilling club tracks she’s done, and certainly the most ‘positive’.

As with previous Xosar releases on Rush Hour, the 12” version of “The Calling”/”Rays of Babylon” will feature her own bespoke sleeve artwork!

Hunched over a plethora of synth modules, the LA-based sound wizard dug deep into the circuits and put together an expertly crafted album driving both lab rats and floor lizards in a glorious frenzy. Now, the puppet master returns with SOMEWHERE, a double headliner 12 relighting the fire and putting the beats where the mouth is. Building on such classic bangers as Mono On Mono, Timebomb and especially Mind Bend (with Justin Maxwell), the A sides title cut SOMEWHERE dispatches a robot sleuth to hunt down the ghost in the machine: Im not really sure, where it comes from, says the voice, but it must be somewhere. However, what started as a simple recon mission quickly evolves into a deliciously pumping affair set for utter dancefloor destruction; fully equipped with razor-sharp percussion and hand-sanded hooklines, this beast of a track certainly knows its way around sweaty dancers. The same premium production values can be found on ELSEWHERE, a slow-burning heartcore stepper hiding its massive bassline in full sight. Glasgow label All Caps bust down the house with their third release in as many years – clearly a label dedicated to quality over quantity – and it’s their best yet; no mean feat considering how high the “WTF” factor was on their previous release, Stacks Riddim from Helix. We’re not sure exactly what TFB stands for, but this 12″ finds Idle Hands and Livity Sound regular Kowton on imperious form with a self styled ode to grime group Ruff Sqwad that captures perfectly All Caps dual love of techno and grime. Pariah and Blawan are handed the honour of the first remix on an All Caps release, and their collective effort as Karenn does a magnificent job of translating the raw energy of Kowton’s original as a mangled, one take techno behemoth cast from hardware.

Raudive, the prolific DJ and producer also known as Oliver Ho, has been putting out a stylistically diverse range of music for nearly 20 years under these guises and various others, on a plethora of labels including Blueprint, Drumcode, Poker Flat, and his own Meta. For his “Last” EP on Halocyan, Raudive has delivered a pair of absolutely uncompromising electronic works. Although this is perhaps Halocyan’s most experimental release to date, the tracks all retain a dance sensibility.

Title track “Last” builds a fantastical techno narrative over beds of cold, precisely controlled reverb and insistent, crucially positioned percussion. A small set of sounds lock deftly into place in various formations, expertly building tension and intrigue as they coalesce into a surpsingly expressive journey. Al Tourettes and Appleblim take the original and add some
colorful techno bounce to their remix, twisting the original’s stern bassline into something more fluid and fun.

B-side “Dumb” operates on little more than a strict, pummeling 4/4 beat and subtle, metallic harmonies to create a deranged and acerbic techno lobotomy, with a pitched-down, barely decipherable voice lording over the proceedings. Steve Moore (of L.I.E.S., Zombi) takes “Dumb” and ramps up the darkness, crafting a John Carpenter worthy atmosphere of terror,
paranoia, and dread, custom-tailored for the dancefloor.
