Not content with staking their claim as the greatest purveyors of 80’s inspired synth pop – Russian pop sensation Tesla Boy press forward toward total global domination with their new single 1991.
As with their previous works they proudly wear their influences on their sleeves, but are never a cheap copy or a poor facsimile of what has come before. 1991 is set against the backdrop of the changes to Russia during the years of increased individual freedoms and access to cultures far beyond the iron curtain. But it doesn’t just draw from the early 90’s historically – its acid house drums and looped vocal sample evoke memories of those euphoric days of hedonism in abandoned air-fields the length and breadth of the UK.
Whilst it’s a departure for them sonically, it is still immediately identifiable as Tesla Boy, with Ant’s distortive vocal and talent for writing the catchiest of hooks. Already a fan favourite from their recent tours of Modern Thrills, more and more fans knew the words as each night went on.
