The work of Viennese artist Patricia Enigl, Quantum Oscillations draws on a range of influences from electro-acoustic and dark ambient to minimal techno. It results in a work that is both daring and demanding, but despite its many influences, also cohesive. From the eerie, layered textures of “Ground State” and the menacing, enveloping soundscapes of “Entanglement” through the death march drums and shadowy moods on “Magnetic Monopole” and the chilling effects and broken beats of “Vacuum Fluctuations”, Enigl is clearly comfortable working away from the confines of the dance floor. At the same time, she is also able to bring that unpredictable, twitchy sensibility to techno arranging, most impressively on the detuned, cold bleeps of “Microstate”.

With little to no information on hand as to the genesis of this collaboration between SUED boss SVN and the superbly named Club No-No the imagination is left unfettered to speculate. Listening to both tracks, you are moved to ponder whether they are the result of SVN and Club No-No (aka Snorre Magnar Solberg) embarking on a field recording trip to the local zoo. The sounds of unspecified wildlife is wedged deep within the grooves of both sides, with the A Side track the sort of ambient techno you feel Actress wants to make as the merest of percolating textures and soft basslines hinting at a degree of rhythm amidst a calming backdrop of found sound. The B Side is a markedly more urgent production and the lack of kick drum offers interesting mixing possibilities for the more talented of DJs out there.

This year has been a productive one for the Livity Sound label, if not the trio of producers behind the acclaimed outfit. While new collaborative material from Peverelist, Kowton and Asusu has been thin on the ground, the Livity Sound Remixes series – in which friends from the techno and bass scenes remodel their work – has spawned six essential 12″ singles. Here, that material makes it to CD for the first time. It’s packed with inspired, floor-friendly interpretations, from the contemporary bleep-and-bass techno of Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup’s rework of Kowton’s “More Games”, to the distorted throb and intense loops of Ghost 202’s faintly foreboding version of Peverlist’s “Livity”.

Mexican Techno artist Emmerichk first discovered the world of electronic music at a very early age: His father was a great fan of electronic sounds and the young Emmerichk was introduced to the sounds of legendary German group ‘Kraftwerk’ and also heard music from Japan’s pioneering electronic / space music composer ‘Isao Tomita’.

At the age of 14 he had access to a sound studio and learned how to use mixers, drum machines and synthesizers and gradually began to create his own electronic music. He embraced the rise of the modern electronic scene in Mexico and in turn he made contact with many other artists that had similar interests and music styles. Together, they worked with their music and ideas and found adequate means to publish their music.

The final result being ‘Late Nineties’ – A tribute to the Techno artists who have laid the path in electronic music history. This is Emmerichk’s “vision” of Techno. A fusion of digital and analog machines, deep and dark sounds resulting in diverse parallel layers of sound.
