It’s some three years since Boris Bunnik – he of Conforce, Versalife and Hexagon fame – debuted the Silent Harbour alias with an atmospheric full-length on Echochord. Like that set, Hinterland sits at the crossroads where IDM, ambient and dub techno meet. The electro-influenced, delay-laden beats bubble and pop, melodies slowly drift between the speakers, psychedelic acid lines lap around the sound space, and drowsy electronic textures effortlessly slip from the speakers. It’s a stylistic brew that not only evokes images of moonlit strolls down windswept beaches, but also the icy ambience and glacial electronica of Air Liquide. It is, of course, beautifully produced, and makes for riveting – if occasionally a little unsettling – listening.
