The Head Front Panel label gets extra twisted on this 6th release, one we have been eagerly awaiting here at Juno HQ . At a first glance the four untitled tracks here fit in perfectly alongside previous releases from the blossoming offshoot of Tabernacle, but spend a bit of time with this record and a turntable and some interesting rhythmic kinks reveal themselves. See the smart little drum edits that break up the Mills-style stomp of the opening track, whilst “A2” doesn’t go forwards so much as run around in rhythmic circles. Shorn elements of that track seem to be retained on “B1” cut up and moulded into a searing new production that jitters nervously, almost as if it’s about to implode at any moment. If you can pick yourself up after that, the closing track homes in on a nightmarish techno stomp that really demands rotation on a heavyweight soundsystem.

Founded last year, the Head Front Panel series from Tabernacle has proved to be a more serious counterpart to Creme Organisation’s equally anonymous R-Zone offshoot. Where the Dutch label’s thirteen plus R Zone 12″s have veered from jungle to new beat via house and techno and delivered them with a knowing wink, the Head Front Panel records have remained resolutely for the sterner floors. It’s no different with no 5 (one of two released this week) with four untitled tracks that fairly demand beating down in front of a willing audience. Uwe Schmidt is one of the most prolific contemporary electronic musicians of our era, with over 200 releases produced under a dizzying array of aliases. Perhaps his most well known and celebrated project is Señor Coconut, of “Cha cha cha” Kraftwerk cover fame. We’ve heard many dozens of Uwe’s releases and consider more than a few of them to be Bunker classics that are in constant rotation at both our house and on our dancefloor.

When we first heard his compilation of tunes organized as a satirical history of acid house released under the Atom™ moniker – “Acid Evolution 1988-2003”, we started hounding Uwe about performing this material live at The Bunker. We eventually got him to perform an improvised live hardware set with Tobias, then were lucky enough to have him perform his A/V set for us, and most recently were treated to a solo techno set of the Ground Loop material just last year.

We asked Uwe to flesh out a few of the clips he’d put online of Ground Loop material with a view to releasing a record for The Bunker and two days later these two monsters landed in our inbox. Two brand new Atom™ dancefloor acid explosions that stand alongside the best of his work. Enjoy!

A key member of the Minus family for almost a decade, Jon Gaiser is to release False Light, his third artist album on Richie Hawtin’s label in autumn 2014. The ten-track affair shows the American born, Berlin based techno innovator to have continued to evolve since his last full length and again is a very complete and contemporary techno tale. Since 2005, Gaiser has been at the heart of the minimal techno movement. His hugely atmospheric EPs and LPs have always explored the darker, more stripped back and abstract edges of the dancefloor and have often done so in conjunction with immersive and complimentary live visuals. Says Gaiser of his working methods: “I’ve always been a big fan of analog gear, both old and new. I’m also a big fan of new digital technologies that create sounds that have never been heard before. I prefer to have the best of both analog and digital worlds working together, to make the most creatively flexible production environment as possible.” As well as working as VOID, Gaiser is also a revered live performer who creates immersive on-the-fly soundscapes using Ableton MIDI controllers and Maschine, and regularly performs at some of the world’s best festivals and club nights, including Hawtin’s own ENTER. nights at Space Ibiza. A trained percussionist and sometime punk rock drummer, around the age of 15 Gaiser discovered the underground techno scene in Detroit and “was completely intrigued by the energy of the music” and so began collecting drum machines, synthesizers and FX units to build a studio in his teens. Before long he impressed techno innovator Richie Hawtin, was signed to Minus and soon began releasing on the seminal label. Playing in Europe so often meant the natural thing for him to do was to move to Berlin, and it is from there that his sound has flourished. The new album was written with a specific approach in mind, as Jon explains: “My main idea while working on this album was to go into the studio and have as much fun as possible. I wanted to create something where each track complemented each other, where all of the tracks relate to each other in a way so that the whole album tells a story. But ultimately, I wanted it to be a fun story.”
