After 5 years Renato is back! Ladies and gentlemen, we are going through an area of turbulence, we ask all passengers to remain seated, with your seatbelts fastened… Anyone whos ever experienced the treacherous descent to Cagliari airport will totally understand Renato Figolis fear of flying, but in contrast to the loudspeaker announcement that introduces Funkoholic, the Sardinian producers album is anything but turbulent the smoothest of takeoffs, superb in-flight entertainment and controlled touchdown make it an early contender for one of 2013s most rewarding listens, not to mention one of AMAM’s strongest entries to date. Renato has been drifting on and off the electronic radar for the best part of eight years since a flurry of releases on Lo Fi Stereo, Gumption and Trapez launched him into prominence. During this timeframe, he also linked up with a teenage Alessio Mereu, who, under Renato’s guidance, learned the ins and outs of production with Logic. Now that Alessio’s label AMAM has built up an international audience over the past few years, it seemed the perfect home for Renato’s new full-length record, his first in five years. Funkoholic closes the loop in a musical sense, allowing Renato the scope to fully realise his potential while setting out a musical doctrine that merges deep techno, funk, dub, jazz and ambience in a truly idiosyncratic manner. The album consists of nine tracks, each linked by elegantly crafted ambient transitions that leave the listener in a state of suspended animation. This constant alternation between inner space and outer space is one of the albums defining features, balancing style and content in equal measures. It also allows Renato to patiently strip down his arrangements something thats not always possible on a single track or EP to reveal the complex internal workings of ideas that have clearly evolved through endless late-night sonic excursions. His music has always sung in a language of its own: the chord progressions, fat, rolling bass lines and quirky rhythms instantly recognisable to anyone acquainted with his sound. Here, though, he takes the formula one step further, inviting jazz guitarist Carlo Ditta and trumpeter Mario Massa to add their virtuosity to the proceedings. In fact, their classy improvisations dominate the opening section of the album, adding an additional dimension to the epic soundscapes of Underpool and the raw, shuffling title track Funkoholic, while Neville Attrees commentary on the double-edged nature of obsession lends anymore a dark, brooding energy. Switching to autopilot, And Again is a fine example of how peripheral elements from one track can slowly move to the foreground to become the central focus of the next, while Buck a Guy returns to classic Figoli territory, turning the screw with a twisting acid loop designed to bounce on through till morning. Renatos in no hurry to tear up the dancefloor, however, as Call One slows things down to a deep, throbbing groove, again utilising Dittas deft finger work in a spontaneous merging of minds that could only emanate from Sardinian shores. Super Lemon Vapor dives even deeper into the subconscious with tripped out metallic FX skipping and sliding through the hidden gateway to a smokers paradise. This all sets the scene for one final push as the twin forces of Morning and Night Express up the tempo in a powerful burst of cyclic energy. Turbulence or not, when Renatos at the controls, the crowd will be out of their seats and dancing in the aisles. Thank you for flying with AMAM and we wish you a pleasant journey…

Well underway for 2013, NastyFunk Records are back with one of their most forward thinking releases to date. Fresh from Miami and into your ears are Troncoso and Submuller (or Subtron) who have taken the deep scene by storm this year with big signings between them on Get Physical, Nurvous and Electronique amongst others. Their collaboration results in NF011, which is truly in a class of it’s own and filled to the brim with underground sounds. Serious house beats and deep techy elements contort and combine to great effect in the original mixes, whilst the two remixes take the tracks to two different places. The title track, Everything, with it’s intelligent dual baseline, futuristic pads and trippy synth breakdowns keeps Miami nu-wave in it’s heart, but it’s real patronage is to today’s deep sound. It’s a real delight for the ears with a contagious groove to match, and that’s without mentioning those spectacular vocals… and THAT drop. The B Side, That Funky Girl, is the perfect compliment to the EP, showing a much nastier, darker, and much more introverted side to the duo, with hooky lyrics, dark contrasting harmonies, and a driving beat. As always, NastyFunk deliver hot property when it comes to the remixers. Crosstown Rebel’s own Walker & Royce take the first duties with a sunshine vibe perfect for WMC. The track grows and grows and keeps the poolside shaking with stupendous breakdowns and an incredibly uplifting arrangement ensuring you’ll be asking for more. The second rework comes from the unquestionably excellent, Flow & Zeo. Filled with dancefloor busting Brasilian Funk and spine tingling emotion in equal measures, this one’s certain to turn any dancefloor into a free for all, whilst it’s harmonic composition is guaranteed to obliterate your musical tastebuds. A true testament to the genres of Deep House and Indie Dance/Nu Disco, this one’s a keeper.

The law deals with restrictions concerning the sale of sex and businesses of similar type. Due to the ambiguous way of reading it, the law also deals with nightclubs and related establishments that allow customers to dance. Especially in the last two years, clubs all over Japan have suffered under the authorities who often strictly enforce a 1 AM curfew deducted from an archaic adult entertainment law. Instead of moaning and stopping the dance, Mule Musiq is ready to raise a protest with DJ Sprinkles. Today, dancing is one of the most perfect ways to express emotion, social interaction, and spiritual communication and Where Dancefloors Stand Still spreads music to devoted dancers who will love to share all they have to reveal. Who knows better about revealing emotions on the dancefloor than Terre Thaemlitz — internationally-acclaimed writer, public speaker, multimedia producer, DJ, audio producer, and head honcho of Comatonse Recordings. His deep house alias DJ Sprinkles has been beloved ever since he first started playing in the gay clubs of midtown Manhattan and New Jersey in the late ’80s and early ’90s — a time when deep house began to take shape. After the scene got famous and landed hard, DJ Sprinkles embarked to Japan where he held a three-year residency at Tokyo’s Club Module from 2003 till 2006. In January 2009, he released his album Midtown 120 Blues (MUSIQ 009CD), which was hailed as one of the most essential house albums of the last few years. His new DJ mix intends to free Japan’s clubs from the Fuzoku law restrictions and to move your hips, too. The mix takes off with a Chicago deep house classic from 1992: Braxton Holmes’ debut EP “12 Inches of Pleasure” — here rendered in Ron Trent’s super-sweet foreplay mix. His deepness merges gently into Alex Danilov’s house hug “Deep S,” and then dives deep into house science and swings between the decades without losing the flow. Then there are classics such as “I Can’t Forget” from Sound Mechanix, “The Dip” by The Rude Awakening, and legendary trio Fingers Inc. with “Never No More Lonely.” In between, are soulful arrangements like “Forestfunk I” from Understars, “Everybody’s Talkin'” by Mymy, and “The Deep” from Manoo & François. The mix grooves with DJ Sprinkles’ trippy mixing signature that playfully melts tracks that are built from flying piano notes, tactile bass lines, kicking drums, and layered samples. If your dancefloor stands still, too, here comes about 80 minutes of house deepness that will make it swing. The album artwork comes from Emi Winter — an artist from Oaxaca, Mexico.
