Review
Whilst Marquis Hawkes is off being wooed by the likes of Creme Organization and Houndstooth, Dixon Avenue Basement Jams keep their sights squared on the lesser known names with their latest release a debut for Denis Sulta. Apparently an alias for a long time friend of Glasgow institution Rubadub, Sulta’s cuts have been soundtracking the summer sets from the DABJ label bosses, Jackmaster and JD Twitch and the chance to scoop them up should not be missed. There’s an element of cheek present from the off here, with the mangled treatment of an Oliver Cheatam classic on “Saturday Nite” our personal favourite.

Nick Lapien has been sharpening his music sound a number of monikers; Metropolis, Nepal and his own name. On labels like Other Heights and Sequencias the Dutch man has moulded smoke stained Chicago, textured Techno and drifting Ambient. For Photic Fields this homegrown talent brings together two of his nom de plums under the banner of Marchland.

Basslines bulge, pressing against dampened claps for “Ballad of a Man.” Banks of harmony drift off an analogue ocean, arcs of string dawning into a rich radiance. Submerged notes bend and blur with “Bobby Konders”, streams of synth flowing past columns of carved percussion. Rolling chords see Lapien don his Metropolis mask for“Black Motor Boogie.” Acid vultures circle with beady eyed intent, claws writhe and flex amidst a flurry of beat and pad. The shimmering keys of “The Gatekeeper” takes the listener throw a winding pass. Curving 303 contortions fold and reform under pressurised bursts of tom, cymbal and snare to end this journey into Marchland.

A Francesco Tristano’s hand behind a set of five killer tracks that conform ‚Piano, Hats & Stabs EP‘, an EP made for open-eared and open-minded listeners. Tristano, virtuoso pianist and composer known for his taste for the electronic and hybrid, has been blowing away dance music-heads for a while thanks to his impressive live sets solo and alongside the likes of Moritz von Oswald and Carl Craig – with whom he recently appeared on a special edition of Boiler Room. Now, Get Physical has the honor to be hosting the musician’s even deeper delve into the world of techno. Inspired by an “ongoing quest to unite the sounds of the acoustic grand piano with electronic synthesizers, sequences and drum loops”, the ‚Piano, Hats & Stabs EP‘ draws from over nine months of studio sessions all the way from Paris and Utrecht to Barcelona and Rome. A tense and reeling monster of a release that would seem aimed at leaving you breathless – and setting dance floors on fire -, you can almost picture Tristano hunched over a grand piano, hammering away like a madman for the five tracks that take us from ‚Dminorloop’ split personality with its build-ups and deconstructions to the driving ‚Sarasani‘, on to ‚Stekker Sound Driver’ decaying bassline and ‚Gaza World Cup’ chest-thumping roll. It all ends on a lighter note with ‚Place on Lafayette’ almost psychedelic keys – actually recorded on Lafayette Place, in Detroit. Techno, Electronica, classical?
