Time Attendant – Bloodhounds

Artist: Time Attendant
Title Of Album: Bloodhounds
Year Of Release: 2014
Label: Exotic Pylon
Genre: Experimental
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 00:38:58
Total Size: 82 mb

Tracklist:
01 Ermine Fever
02 Nettle Sting Riddle
03 Inky’s Pitch
04 Crystal Mascot
05 Sugar Beet Perfume
06 Stalking Lines
07 Flashy Pointer
08 Fuchsia Circles

Set within a landscape of sugar beet factories, deep murky fishing ponds and nettle strewn country lanes, Bloodhounds is a sonic exploration of a childhood spent in the English countryside. Time Attendant is Paul Snowdon, a painter and musician recovering from a rural Northern upbringing by eking out a liminal existence across South East London bunkers. Following on from the highly acclaimed Treacherous Orb EP (More Than Human) and from startling contributions on The Outer Church compilation (Front & Follow), Moon Wiring Club’s specially curated Down By The Silver Sea (Gecophonic), and an astonishing set in late 2013 (accompanying the silent film L’inferno (Helios Film version, 1911)) at the BFI in London, Exotic Pylon is slobberingly psyched to present Time Attendant’s debut album Blood Hounds which drops on vinyl and digital on July 7th 2014. Continuing and expanding upon the strange strain of medieval acid (©Kek-w (Hacker Farm)) first explored on 2012’s debut 12” Tournaments Snowdon has pushed his highly original and peculiar vision into the strangest of corners collaging stuttering sine beats, lost in fog voices, surreal fanfares and sci-fi dub reverb around a minimal but endlessly flexible array of analogue boxes with just a modicum of digital post-production. This is genuinely Radiophonic – an unconscious misuse of equipment to paint inexpressible sound worlds, Snowdon being as influenced by contemporary electronica as he is by the secret history of electronics reared in academic laboratories from the early 20th century and onwards. Like unearthing lost Brutalist architecture at a village fete, Time Attendant brings out the paradoxical pains and pleasures from an environment where the concepts of industrial and rural are rendered meaningless. Like the beautifully unique paintings that Snowdon creates Bloodhounds is the pinnacle of his sonic vision thus far – an earthbound sci-fi expose of the mud and stone beneath our feet.”

3. Mesohippus 7:33
4. Tainted 6:44

Paul Dickow aka Strategy drops arguably his best ever single with the ‘Pressure Wassure’ EP for LA’s Peak Oil label. Operating at slow/fast and junglist ‘ardcore meters and armed with a massive sack of drums and deadly subs, the vibes are super forward and infectious. On ‘Osmosis’ he mixes bristling 808s with slick dub chord stabs and a woozy lead recalling Ethiopiques and Eritrean melodies, whereas ‘Bubble N’ Snare’ flexes out with wild snare cadence and booty-bass/jungle patterns. ‘Mesophippus’ gee’s up a swinging 2-step beauty with tightest dubbing and juggling drums, and ‘tainted’ leans heavy ont he halfstep with spare bass pulses and pinging dub chords played right and tight for the steppers. Serious session!

8.Eyelids’ Secrets (Ikonika’ Shy remix) 04:02

Italian producer My Dry Wet Mess, aka Giovanni Civitenga, is a name that has resonated in the world of left field/beats since it’s exciting fledgling years. Though his father is the bass player for Ennio Morricone’s orchestra and a studio guitarist on numerous Italian records, from a young age Gio was drawn towards hip hop. Having released albums on Daedleus’ Magical Properties and Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder, Fine Grains present his debut vinyl release – ‘Laptop Lapdance’. The EP comes equipped with remixes by Hyperdub’ Ikonika, Dam Mantle and Auntie Flo.

My Dry Wet Mess’ unique sound is recognisable for it’s multi-layered intricacy and offbeat charm. Skittering beats slide through surreal melodies and distorted vocals or keys. An uplifting and awkward dance-inducing experience often ensues. In ‘Laptop Lapdance’, Civitenga encapsulates these elements with four engrossing story-telling tracks. Remixes come from Hyperdub’ Ikonika, Dam Mantle and Auntie Flo. The latter starting with a dreamy analogue rework of ‘Nailed Scale’, a gentle breezy groove with a plethora of subtle details peaking out from the undergrowth. If Auntie Flo’s remix is a curious walk along the jungle path, Dam’s Mantle’s ‘Nailed Scale’ remix is head first into the depths. Dark and prowling, Mantle strips down the emotive elements to tribal claps and creepy background echoes. Stepping further into techno territory, Ikonika’s ‘Scenario Adjustment remix’ highlights the metallic and futuristic elements of ‘Eyelids’ Secret’. A stomping mechanical rhythm goes for the jugular from start to finish. In her ‘Shy’ remix of the track, Ikonika wraps up with a beat-less cinematic twist. An epic and ethereal finish befitting a futuristic sci-fi film score.

Lumisokea – Eavesdropping on pianists

Format: MP3

Genre: Electronic

Tracklist:
1.The Engineerist 07:42
2.Popov plays the big drum 04:18
3.Mkhat 05:04
4.Rhythmicon 06:55

The music on this EP furthers our research into rhythm, synthesis and electro-acoustics, combining elements of noise music, musique concrète, techno and traditional percussion music from southern India and Korea. The sound sources of most of the percussion come from recordings we made of futuristic ‘Noise Machines’, designed by Vladimir Popov in the 1920’s. These were exhibited in Berlin during the 2014 CTM festival at the ReNoise exhibition at Kunstraum Bethaniën. Besides Popov’s Noise Instruments, there’s quite some material coming from obscure synths recorded at STEIM (such as Böhm Soundlab modular synthesizer, STEIM-built Black Boxes) on top of our own instruments. Dave Saved – Power & Silence: Deindustrialization

4. Random Souls Fluidity (03:45)
5. Power & Silence (Aisha Devi mindworker rework) (06:15)
6. Virtual Feelings (GOD rework) (04:28)

Following last year’s strong cassette release Prisoners Of Gravity on Astro:Dynamics, Dave Saved returns with a new offering for like-minded label Gang Of Ducks, and it finds the Italian producer exploring yet more oblique yet curiously enchanting soundscapes and textures. There is still plenty of melody present to draw you in, not least on opening track “Power & Silence”, but still a whisper of rhythm can be found straining underneath the cloying synth tones, such as the strangled shuffle that tries to propel “No Lights”. Things take a darker turn in the mechanical murk of “Virtual Feelings”, while Aisha Devi drops a powerful and staggered remix of “Power & Silence” and GOD reworks “Virtual Feelings” into a slow but cavernous techno roller with a healthy sprinkling of dust on top.

7 months on from TP#4, Demdike return with the 5th instalment in their ongoing research and development series – a double-headed monster split between gnarly reductions on the A-side, and industrial strength edits on the flip. ‘Procrastination’ edges through Grimey detritus and gunshot snares within a vast open space perfectly primed for that Demdike slow build. ‘Past Majesty’ on the flip offers up a feral take on some kind of cyber-industrial insanity, somewhere between Ministry and Powell – with a denouement which should probably come with a public health warning attached to it. All we’re saying is – watch yr eardrums.

Peter Marks wrote:

Yet another spectral issuance comes out of the ether and into our ears. This release had been in the planning phases as far back as when COIL still existed so it’s somewhat strange to only get it now that both of them have departed the terrestrial realm, but regardless, ‘Time Machines II’ represents something I’d always wanted to hear: a solo record from Peter Christopherson. Now, some may quibble and say that The Choir was him on his own and there’s something to that; it was still a project name and not his own. For those who own the Amulet edition, what’s going on here won’t come across as being quite so aberrant…everyone else might do well to prepare themselves. Those three ELpH tracks from the ‘Born Again Pagans’ EP were a harbinger of things to come.

I can feel the layers of my mind being gently compressed and re-aligned by this album, just as they were by the first Time Machines record. The difference is that the chaotic aggression present in the debut has been replaced by pitch black darkness. No beginning. No end. One just drifts along with the current directing both thought and action in a very subversive manner. I don’t have the same sense of something violent being done to my synapses but I somehow become more and more aware of my own mortality listening to this thing, perhaps that is what Christopherson was after given that this material was done close to the end of his own life. The shuffling off of that mortal coil, so to speak.

What is most present in these recordings would be the same kind of marauding, disorienting sound field experimentation he did so well along with Jhonn Balance. The weight of these compositions is immense, a density reading would no doubt come away broken. There just isn’t any kind of method or test to define the parameters of the elements at play on here, and even if there were, who’d want the mystery dispelled. The slight of hand card tricks which others happily bandy about as avant-garde just fall down upon themselves and are revealed to be nothing but a faulty house of cards. Sleazy never really got into discussing how he made the music he did… no matter how many interviewers probed and prodded, he would not give anything up.

As with SoiSong, there’s a fabulous design element to what he’s given up here. And, naturally, a highly limited aspect is present as well. Those who want this thing are prepared to pay dearly to obtain it, and who can fault them? Christopherson was, without doubt, a master manipulator of acoustical space, one who could bend choirs out of inert objects and who also had a director’s eye. Remember, quite a few videos were authored by him and many may surprise you. His range was one of personal settings, an arrangement of tastes which made sense to no one else. I’ve read how he constructed the machines used to make this record himself which, if true, would take us right back to the beginnings when Chris Carter built electronic creations for him in Throbbing Gristle.

So it all has come full circle. I suspect I’m going to be hearing more of these kinds of things as I grow older and to tell you the truth, I’ve been waiting for them since my 20s. The end-of-life auditory journals of artists and the machines which are all they have left, stripped of the banality of youth and the trappings of social surroundings… all that remains are those sounds. Long after their creators are no more, the fruit of their imagination lingers on. Flickering, like the wings of myriad butterflies anchoring the rudder of fate.

For the third instalment on Kutmah’s experimental IZWID imprint, south London DJ and producer Al Dobson Jr. creates a 15 track deep, exploration of soulful, tribal drums and abstract musical curation.

Otherworldly and nuanced beats re-imagine the score of the sampledelic funk tale. One that’s non-geographical but rather lost in loops, journeying through the time and space that exists within your headphones. Alternating between cosmic vocal rips and a myriad of loose, soul-infused beat tape-style sketches with its digital flourishes, “Sounds from the Village Vol. 1” sees the sunrise and sunset over a bohemian musical vista.

As with all of the output on IZWID, Kutmah’s hand drawn artwork brings to life the story of the release, revisiting a boundary-less and positive manifesto that reputes the tyranny of genre.
