Dissolved – Surge Of The Lucid

Title Of Album: Surge Of The Lucid
Year Of Release: 28 jan 2013
Label: Daddy Tank
Genre: Ambient, IDM, Experimental, Glitch, Electronic
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 00:59:37
Total Size: 136 mb

Tracklist:
1.Heart Of The Well 01:59
2.Your Age In Shark Years 04:02
3.Selmentrasm 06:26
4.Forgotten Processes 09:51
5.Lenslock 03:31
6.Stickleback Red 05:52
7.Machinery In Sea Water 04:52
8.Ski Run In The Distance 08:03
9.On Board The Deuterium Arc 14:57

Dissolved‘s last venture was a shared excursion with Nonima; Paul Daniels’ latest is a solo outing, a little less industrial in nature but still tailored for dance floors. A few tracks are obvious highlights, but the album as a whole is consistently engaging.

By virtue of its unusual juxtapositions, the 10-minute “Forgotten Processes” leaps from the album and runs around the room with its spangles and decals falling off. The track begins with recessed organ and a female spoken word monologue about working in a darkroom. It’s only been a few years since the darkroom career dissolved, a victim of digital processing, but already the thought of developing film in the dark produces a sense of nostalgia. Lisa Stampfli’s vocals recall Sina Hübner of Psychobitch: confident yet wistful, with a touch of defiance. As she speaks of her own undeveloped life and stops wearing her mask, one can sense a growing temporal displacement. Twirling patterns of drums and synth surround her voice like waterspouts. Originality is key; this is likely the first song to include the lyric, “I’m replacing water with silver bromide.”

Of the other dance tracks, “Stickleback Red” is the most effective, due to a 90-second outro that pumps up the drums while eliminating all extraneous sounds. This percussive jam would be well-served by a remix; perhaps it’s time to give Nomina a call again! As for the track title, it may refer to either a fish or an Australian wine, but since it’s an instrumental, few will ask. ”Your Age in Shark Years” adds party banter, IDM textures and a layer of sampled 80s-style vox; “Selmantrasm” is the album’s speed demon at 146 b.p.m..

The finale “On Board the Deuterium Arc” is a risk that pays off, a fifteen-minute track that serves as a musical reflection of the ultraviolet spectrum, the practice of spectroscopy and the danger of looking too closely into the brilliance of discharged light. (As a certain New Jersey artist once wrote, “Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun; but Mama, that’s where the fun is!”) This rotating instrumental never settles on a single pattern for too long, in tune with the natural variances in light gradation. As time passes, it contacts and folds over itself until one is no longer sure where it begins or ends, like a ball of yarn whose ends have been lost. The spell is only broken once, in the middle of the piece, with the spoken words, “Bass. Drums. The D.J.” – rather unnecessary since one would normally be aware of these three things in a club. Such minor indulgences can be forgiven in the service of the beat. (Richard Allen)

In the early nineties the world began taking a shine to a quite curious phenomenon which was still regarded in many places as part of the even more curious genre label IDM. Its protagonists such as Richard James and Autechre created grandiose and bewildering (or bewildered?) cosmoses of sound whose exponential complexity could only be escaped by departing in the opposite direction minimal techno as an escape route to the future! While these two extremes were played off against one another for the next decade and deconstruction was pushed to its limit, now the time finally seems right for something new for a removal of strict genre boundaries, for a joint exploration of form and colour, for a combination of function and emotion. BPC meets this current transition with an ambitious compilation album bearing the fitting title Where the Wind blows. The name requires little interpretation: seventeen striking and all previously unreleased tracks from as many artists reveal where the wind could be blowing at BPC in the future. On board, alongside numerous BPitch veterans such as Kiki, Thomas Muller, Jahcoozi and label boss Ellen Allien herself, are renowned remixers from the BPC network, including the Polish DJ duo Viadrina and the Irish-Canadian Amirali, a London resident and newcomer to the Crosstown Rebels label. Interested BPC fans got a taste of their superb remixes for artists including We Love last year. Of course, a fresh wind means completely new input as well. So it comes as no surprise that the BPitch circle has been expanded to include a few more illustrious names: Tomas Barfod, with releases on Get Physical, Kitusé and Gomma, is not only one of the stars of his native Danish club scene, he is also the drummer and producer for the exceptional band WhoMadeWho. Still an inside tip (for now) are Douglas Greed and Mooryc, hailing from the Freude am Tanzen crew, who have combined to form Eating Snow and are serving up modern electro pop featuring first-rate vocals. There is a compelling performance from another gifted vocalist, Joy Adegoke, who is riding a wave of success with producer Jim Janssens as Joy Wellboy in their home city of Brussels. She adorns Where the Wind Blows with a cool, soulful-electronic, down-tempo gem. The transition from highly structured minimalism to atmospheric, song-oriented alternative electronica is noticeable as a strong thread running through the entire album. It offers Telefon Tel Aviv’s dramatic soundscapes just as much room as Dillon’s distinctive, almost painfully intense singer-songwriter sketches. Filled with a broad, liberating anything goes attitude, the artists involved appear to have forgotten all constricting genre boundaries: the label boss delivers a surprise with a very uncharacteristic cerebral cinema soundtrack, almost rocky in its driving rhythm; Chaim combines house and space-disco elements with a wink of the eye; mechanical sound specialist Thomas Muller serves up a piece that could almost be interpreted as tech-house parody; and Hercules And Love Affair singer Area Negrot takes us by surprise by revealing a naive-poppy side that no one would have previously suspected. The high proportion of vocal tracks on Where the Wind blows underlines the commitment to colour and the shift towards a new emotionality. The musical diversity of the album and the year that BPC boss Ellen Allien spent actually compiling the tracks in no way impede its consistency and conviction. On the contrary: Where the Wind blows simultaneously takes stock of where a successful label stands and points to a vision of the future of electronic music.

Blank & Jones’ deliberately simple dance music dominated the top of Germany’s dance charts during the country’s late-’90s trance explosion. After a chance meeting at the PopKomm music conference, onetime record clerk Piet Blank and Ratinger Hof’s resident DJ Jaspa Jones formed the Blank & Jones production team to make broad trance records of the Aeon, Kai Tracid, DJ Manta, Darude, and Angelic variety. Met with consistent financial success as they laid the groundwork for their full-lengths, Blank & Jones also won the respect of their peers, finding remix work for Fragma, Mauro Picotto, and Moby, as well as getting the chance to use Yello’s Dieter Meier on their second album, 2001’s Nightclubbing. Substance followed in 2002, while 2003 saw them release Relax: Edition One, the first in a series of downtempo chillout albums. Their 2008 effort, The Logic of Pleasure, featured vocals from Vanessa Daou, Claudia Brücken, and New Order’s Bernard Sumner, and was followed in 2009 by Blank & Jones Presents So 80’s, a mix of the duo’s favorite ’80s tracks. A seventh edition in the Relax series landed in 2012.

The authors of the mix are Daniele Antezza and Giovanni Conti, also known as Dadub, an Italian electronic music duo and mastering engineers based in Berlin, Germany. Dadub used to be a solo project started by sound designer and musician Antezza in 2008. However, soon he was joined by Conti who was working on the interactive digital art projects at that time. Conti has brought a vast baggage of knowledge about hardware and software and duo immersed into producing. Both members are working in Artefacts Mastering studio and are highly connected to Stroboscopic Artefacts label where they have released 4 EPs and recent critically acclaimed debut album “You Are Eternity”. Influenced by King Tubby and fascinated by Lee Scratch Perry’s mix board experiments, Dadub is looking for innovative ways to merge old production formulas, new technical possibilities and sound constructing modules. “We care a lot of low frequencies and deep hypnotic atmospheres, and we both were drummers, so we guess the beats are important for us, both the patterns and the sounds,” Dadub says about their music characteristics in the interview for Electric Deluxe. While combining embossed techno rhythms and music related to dub and ambient sound textures, Dadub extracts carefully measured audio structures that could be described as moving colossal monuments. Their dynamic and powerful live performances were showcased internationally at Sonar festival in Barcelona, Melt! festival in Germany and in clubs from Berlin to Moscow and New York. So there is no doubt that the audience will hear a lot from this prominent duo in the nearest future.

By following Dadub’s recent recordings for Boiler Room, Resident Advisor and Electronic Explorations Secret Thirteen is happy to present their latest influential selection together with the celebration of the 100th mix of ours. Dadub’s selection indirectly reflects our previous mixes because it carries a lot of different stylistic motives ranging from techno, IDM, experimental to ambient, world and contemporary music. “The selection encompasses different historical moments of electronic music evolution, from the first futurist experiments (Russolo’s composition was composed in 1914) ’till the contemporary approaches,” says Dadub. The duo has connected 48 lasting records to form the sustained almost 2 hours complex mix where they have used tracks as tools to express their emotions through them. Even though the selection is deliberately eclectic Dadub wisely finds alternative ways to connect the most capricious tracks and to mask the tension between pieces that sometimes resonate. Spectral content of recorded material is always changing and smoothly reshaping its trajectory, it balances between formless compositions and rhythmical sound architecture. Dadub uses diverse audio layers to form completely new structures, new harmonies and constantly expanding sound constructions. They have dubbed and overdubbed this mix by using their new effect set up, a feedback system made by using analog vintage mixer and a couple of dirty delays. It is important to mention that this mix includes many diverse records that were evolved from dub music or could be strongly related to this genre. Among the sublime works by such respectable talents as John Cage, William Basinski, Demdike Stare, Jan Jelinek, Rhythm and Sound, Retina.it the listener will hear 4 pieces from Dadub catalog too. 2 of Dadub’s unpublished experimentations were cut from their performance at Atonal Festival 2013. All in all, “Secret Thirteen Mix 100” is a picturesque and attentively planned audio expedition through depths of emotional horizons and peaks of timeless electronic music.

In July of 2012, RVNG Intl. was invited to participate in Bulletin Boards, a group exhibition at Venus Over Manhattan curated by White Columns’ gallery director Matthew Higgs. An extension of an ongoing project which resides in the entrance of White Columns’ downtown New York gallery, Bulletin Boards featured 24 artists / entities, each given a new bulletin board as an inspirational starting point.

In 1981, David Van Tieghem produced the experimental music video Ear To The Ground. The film features Van Tieghem “playing” downtown New York City, a world in which Van Tieghem established his rhythmic roots as a member of the Love Of Life Orchestra, a frequent collaborator with Laurie Anderson, and a player on Steve Reich’s Music For 18 Musicians, Robert Ashley’s Perfect Lives (Private Parts) / Perfect Lives and David Byrne and Brian Eno’s My Life in the Bush With Ghosts among other seminal recordings including his own.

In Ear To The Ground, all city surfaces become communications – or bulletins – under Van Tieghem’s twiddling, thwacking and thumping thumbs. Partially inspired by this and by our blank but physically limited canvas space, Van Tieghem agreed to take part in a sequence of improvised performances and creative editing to become part of our FRKWYS series.

We also invited ten younger musicians to post objects to the board. A cross section of present day New York artists were represented by way of Sam Hillmer as Diamond Terrifier (with the aid of Max Alper), Future Shuttle, Georgia, Roberto Carlos Lange as Helado Negro, Darren Ho, Eli Keszler, Hiro Kone and Megafortress, alongside the regionally sympathetic Blanche Blanche Blanche and Maxmillion Dunbar.

In place of business cards, broadsheets, and flyers, the objects / communications contributed were broken toasters, firecrackers, 2x4s, thunder drums and customized electronics, each intended as a percussive device. On opening night, the bulletin board, disguised as assemblage, welcomed David’s dialogue.

In the spirit of Ear To The Ground’s infinite conversation, Van Tieghem returned to Venus Over Manhattan to “play” the bulletin board without an audience. The process of Van Tieghem discovering and responding to the objects / bulletins again was multi-tracked in high definition.

These recordings were then presented to the ten contributing musicians for further translation, “remix” and interpretation. For the final sequence, the unique pieces were delivered to Van Tieghem to edit and embellish as the sound collages presented across two album length sides of our tenth volume in the FRKWYS series.
