“When I first began this project twenty eight months ago, I had no idea the end result would look the way it does today. I had obviously a goal in mind, goal which, I am proud to say, I have completely forgotten as the enterprise gained in importance. Nonetheless, I did feel as though I was making progress in some soon to be defined direction. At this level, it wasn’t necessary that my objective was clear. A gut. My gut was pushing me to spit out this… this…tape. Hence the name. Most of the time, I didn’t even know what was going on. The tape is a really nice tape to listen to while you’re, say, running in the park. Just put it in your cassette player and go run outside. You can run in your apartment too if it is big enough but you might as well go outside, if it’s nice enough. You can also listen to it when you are cooking or washing the dishes. Don’t play it, like, if you are a spa owner. That is bad publicity and I can sue for that. I will be very serious with that, don’t play it at your local spa please. Thank you.”

It’s a new Mr. Scruff album and you know what to expect, right? We widdle on about sexy potatoes and bouncy bacteria offering you a cup of tea, you have a little chuckle and actually make a brew, you stick on the album and… hold on. Because you see, quietly and without a lot of fuss (cos that’s not the way the Stockport Strepsil rolls) Mr. Scruff aka Andy Carthy has been evolving and developing his music.

So yeah, you can still count upon a shedload of gritty funk and stony soul (not sure where this metaphor’s going..?) but the new record displays a stripped back musicality, a depth that maybe hasn’t been there before. It’s been coming across his last few releases, but this is the most complete, sustained exploration of where his music is at right now. In Carthy’s own pithy words it’s “tougher, sparser, less samples, more bass. More vocals and collaborations and shorter tunes.”

If this record proves anything, it’s that there’s more, much more to the work of Andy Carthy than dancefloor grooves and funny cartoons.

Don’t worry though – it is still one sexy potato.

Bookending the release are two incredible takes from Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project, an immersive and atmospheric whirlpool to open the release, and a stilled ‘ambient’ version to close the release, frozen swirls of sound drawing the listener under. Tim Hecker gives a characteristically delicate and emotive interpretation of ‘No. No?’ while Vatican Shadow adds dark clatters to ‘Cupid’s Head’. Barker & Baumecker strip back that same track and let it build with a lean percussive flex, while TM404 submerges the track is icy dub and John Tejada and Sonns provide rich and detailed mixes.
