After time spent whipping up singles for Moodmusic and My Best Friend amongst others, Maurice Aymard makes the leap to the long-player with a selection of jams that reflect his propensity for live instrumentation and thoroughly musical constructs within the disco-inflected realms of house music. As if Metro Area were played out by hand, tracks such as “Home” groove hard on plush live bass lines, poignant Rhodes chords and romantic lead synths. Gui Boratto turns up to chip in to “Colours & Drops” with its more prominent techy backbone, but that’s offset by the non-dancefloor roll of “1994”. It’s a diverse album that provides the perfect platform for a skilled craftsman to explore, er, his craft.

Poland-born Radikal Guru is a past master at blending the grizzled, bassbin-bothering sounds of dubstep with deep dub and soulful roots influences. As a result, his releases have an easy accessibility and effortlessly breezy vibe that’s almost impossible to dislike. This second full length (his first dropped in 2011) offers more of the same, delivering a mix of dubwise steppers (“Spaced Out”, “Different Dub”, “Indra”), delay and echo-drenched dancefloor dubscapes (“Subconscious”, “Outernational”), and sweet, conscious, roots-influenced songs (“Stay Calm”, featuring YT, and the superb Echo Ranks hook-up “Warning!”). Killer EBM/darkwave collab between NYC/Chicago’s 51717 and Svengalisghost for Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S. Trust in Pain finds the duo side-stepping the dancefloor to a gloomier, more psychedelic headspace perhaps best consumed in dank basements and dingy bedsits. The combination of Lili Schulder aka 51717’s breathy incantations and Marquis Cooper’s slow-moving, sinuous sonic architectures hark back to classic SPK and Chris & Cosey as much as they remind us of recent exploits from HTRK or even Heinrich Mueller and co’s Zwishenwelt project—a magic union of seductive groove and atmospheric sensuality that begs us to crawl back into its blackened womb. Secret Boyfriend is the solo project of North Carolina’s Ryan Martin, who is also one half of Boyzone (not that Boyzone, unfortunately) and founder of the Hot Releases label – a catholic endeavour that has seen him release records from the cream of the contemporary N.C. underground as well as reissuing classic sides by the likes of Maurizio Bianchi, Ghedalia Tazartes and Ashrae Fax.

To date, Secret Boyfriend’s presence has been felt largely in the shape of live performances and short-run cassette releases (including Carved At Birth, Furnishing The Void and Skin On The Clock), as well as vinyl splits with Russian Tsarlag and Horaflora. This Is Always Where You’ve Lived is SB’s first LP release and unquestionably his most potent, fully realised work to date.

Twelve songs from under the floorboards: a heart-rending but hard-edged synthesis of downer folk, tape experiments, noise etudes and basement-mildewed pop for edgeland fuck-ups, loners and wanderers; recommended if you like Peter Jeffries, Flaming Tunes, Storm Bugs, etc. Arguably comes closer than any previous BEB release to articulating the “mesmerised suburban daydreams of our youth”.

With an array of handmade modular and vintage keyboard synthesizers Daryl Groetsch crafts melodic and layered compositions that evoke microscopic and interstellar landscapes inspired by nature, science fiction and the cosmos. Groetsch has been working under the Pulse Emitter monicker since 2002, composing and recording in his Portland, OR home studio. Writer David Keenan has called Pulse Emitter “the undisputed king of planetary scale synth hypnosis” and has said, “no one is making synth music that feels so organic, so rapturous and so ‘in tune’ with the contours of outer and inner space as Groetsch.”

Inspiration for Crater Lake came from a spiritually moving camping trip Groetsch took to Crater Lake National Park in Oregon where he found it to be one of the most stunningly beautiful places he had ever been. At the time he was conceptualizing an album inspired by the moons of Jupiter and Saturn and noticing similarities between the features of Crater Lake and the moons caused Groetsch to create an album influenced by both the nature in front of him and the cosmos above.

On Crater Lake Groetsch delivers his most intricately composed pieces yet by experimenting with melody and pattern synchronization. Groetsch’s working method begins with conceptualizing each piece and then composing on paper, MIDI sequencing the tracks, synth programming, and finally recording and mixing.

Album opener “Europa” was inspired by the clear blue water of Crater Lake and also relates to the icy surface of the moon Europa that is believed to have an ocean of water underneath it. The album’s second track “lo” is about Crater Lake’s ominous and harsh rock outcropping as well as the volcanic forces taking place underneath Crater Lake and the volcanoes covering the moon lo.

With allegiances that spread as far and wide as the ambient post-rock, UK free improv and Norwegian avant-noise scenes, the duo Glockenspiel are a perfect example of just how much these subgenres of contemporary creative music have in common. On Glockenspiel’s new album Dupleix, guitarist Adrian Dollemore and drummer Steve d’Enton send these apparently diverse areas of experimental underground music into a fresh liaison, connecting them with the kind of energy and spirit associated with the outer limits of both compositional and improvised music. Both musicians have a background in the UK free improv scene, playing extensively with saxophonist Tony Bevan as well as Paul Rutherford and the young, internationally acclaimed contemporary jazz pianist Matthew Bourne. Released on the Babel Label, the second Glockenspiel recording is a spooky sweet slab of electric drone effects-jazz, Sonic Youth-like guitar and hypnotic post-rock and krautrock rhythm.
