Although previously issued in 1997, Innovator derives from the 1991 Derrick May compilation Innovator – Soundtrack for the 10th Planet. In essence, this compilation adds some variants on May classics, with the elongated “Strings Of The Strings Of Life” and “Beyond The Dance”, a deep techno tale on The Dance impressing the most. These are minor digressions however, and cannot compare to the gloriously dreamy “Kaotic Harmony” or “Icon” – the latter being this writer’s favourite May piece – or the hallucinogenic blips and bleeps that accompany the tone-shifting bass on “Nude Photo”. The only downside is that Innovator 2 is unlikely to ever appear.
