Neo-no wave agitator $hit & $hine dumps a killer funk load on Powell’s Diagonal Records, hard on the heels of 2014 madness from the label boss, plus Russell Haswell and Bronze Teeth. ‘Powder Horn”s wiry, banjoed skronk marks Craig Clouse aka $&$’s 1st new album since ‘Jream Baby Jream’ and that split slab with Gnod back in 2012. Poised between rambunctious clatter and clipped, in-the-pocket groove, nine tracks fling-a-body from the virile strut of ‘Astro’s Hat’ to the burned-out Pump styles of ‘Spray Bottle’, taking in the rollicking jag of ‘Bingo’ and the nitrous-fuelled breakbeat torsion of killer highlight, ‘Pearl Drop’ beside sick(ly), mutant boogie in ‘Who’s Your Waitress’ or ‘You Can’t’, and the throttled disco-not-fxxking-disco of ‘PG13’ and ‘Acid Minor’. It all sounds like the deviant dancefloor ramblings of a Texan madman – which is precisely what it is – cocking a wry, skewed look at disco standards from a knowingly punk perspective; imagine the Starck Club circa ’84 programmed by a Sherm Stick-smoking noise shaman and you’ve almost got a grip on its oily, prickling chassis, riddled with hooks and and seatbelt-testing swerve. Whatever it is, it’s bags of sleazy, rotten fun. Highly recommended!

Some two years in the making, the double LP Datafunk Vol 1 compilation from UK label Abstract Forms finally arrives and should be classed under “worth the wait” by anyone with an interest in all strands of electro purism. Datafunk Vol 1 essentially demonstrates how respected Abstract Forms are as a label within the electro community with new and exclusive contributions from such luminaries as DJ Stingray, DMX Krew, mystery Bunker entity Shemale, Further Records Rotterdam correspondent Ian Martin and Andreas Gehm’s Elec Pt 1 project. Don’t skip on the lesser known names such as Das Mooster or Obergman however as their productions help lend Datafunk Vol 1 a sense of cohesion, with “Cycloaddition” from the unheralded Linear Synthesis a notable highlight. If Abstract Forms want to spend another two years working on a second volume that’s fine with us!

DLD established themselves as one of the most promising new bands on the Mexican rock scene with their third album, Ventura (2007), and the follow-up effort, Por Encima, is similarly impressive and boasts quite a few great songs. The band has a refined alternative rock sound reminiscent of the mid-’90s Seattle bands Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. In fact, the resemblance to Pearl Jam is uncanny, especially the vocals of Paco Familiar, who is a dead ringer for Eddie Vedder. Also worthy of special mention is guitarist Erik Neville, whose full-throttle riffs are slightly distorted, heavy, and angular. Though Por Encima is the fourth album by DLD (formerly known as Dildo), it feels as if the band is just now hitting its stride with this album and its predecessor, the aforementioned mainstream breakthrough effort Ventura. DLD aren’t an especially creative band, yet that’s perfectly fine because they’re good at making straight-ahead alternative rock that’s radio-friendly without forsaking any of its edge. Like Pearl Jam, they’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. They don’t need to. They make impassioned rock with memorable hooks and exhilarating riffs. It’s really that simple. It helps, of course, that they have quite a few great songs here on Por Encima. In addition to the lead single “Por Siempre,” which opens with a fantastic dual-guitar riff and is graced with a soaring chorus, the album is front-loaded with a run of three straight standouts, “La Llamada,” “1 de Octubre,” and “Se Va.” While there’s nothing revolutionary about Por Encima, if DLD can continue to crank out albums like this one and Ventura, they’re likely to stay at the forefront of the Mexican rock band for years to come.

Such is the high regard that Lorenzo D’Angelo is held in for his work as Lory D, legend goes the Italian producer has been advised to avoid any trips to Rubadub when he’s playing in Glasgow for fear of being mobbed by an army of over enthusiastic fans looking to get body parts signed. Portland label Soul Research have scored quite a coup in scooping this one sided 12″ from the legendary producer for their third release. Limited to a pressing of just 250, “M100” really slams home what a special talent D’Angelo is; yes “M100” can be played within a techno, house or electro set, yet it’s really none of these genres, its body music at it’s most soulful, dirty and pure.
