Richard H Kirk and Ancient Methods rip the skin off Powell’s mutant ‘Club Music’ EP in a quartet of killer remix pillages for Diagonal. Rigorously tested everywhere from Mancy warehouses to Berlin power stations, the Ancient Methods mixes of ‘Club Music’ are among their very finest; whether in the rictus EBM funk of the ‘Körpersaure91’ version with its stentorian Front242-style bark and graphene-tipped snares, or the ‘phet-sparked clobbering of the manic ‘Pogo Im Säurebad’ – surely their maddest outing ever. Richard H Kirk, however, takes a different tack entirely with ‘So With Went Electric’, reducing its nervous energy into a chugging, narcotically-blunted ‘Main Mix’ and seriously impressing with the drastically eviscerated ‘Dub Mix’. A total sure shot.

Neo-no wave agitator $hit & $hine dumps a killer funk load on Powell’s Diagonal Records, hard on the heels of 2014 madness from the label boss, plus Russell Haswell and Bronze Teeth. ‘Powder Horn”s wiry, banjoed skronk marks Craig Clouse aka $&$’s 1st new album since ‘Jream Baby Jream’ and that split slab with Gnod back in 2012. Poised between rambunctious clatter and clipped, in-the-pocket groove, nine tracks fling-a-body from the virile strut of ‘Astro’s Hat’ to the burned-out Pump styles of ‘Spray Bottle’, taking in the rollicking jag of ‘Bingo’ and the nitrous-fuelled breakbeat torsion of killer highlight, ‘Pearl Drop’ beside sick(ly), mutant boogie in ‘Who’s Your Waitress’ or ‘You Can’t’, and the throttled disco-not-fxxking-disco of ‘PG13’ and ‘Acid Minor’. It all sounds like the deviant dancefloor ramblings of a Texan madman – which is precisely what it is – cocking a wry, skewed look at disco standards from a knowingly punk perspective; imagine the Starck Club circa ’84 programmed by a Sherm Stick-smoking noise shaman and you’ve almost got a grip on its oily, prickling chassis, riddled with hooks and and seatbelt-testing swerve. Whatever it is, it’s bags of sleazy, rotten fun. Highly recommended!

Diagonal unveil the first of two EP’s from Bronze Teeth, a new project from Dominic Butler of Factory Floor and Richard Smith of Optimo Music’s L/F/D/M** Dom Butler (Factory Floor) and Richard Smith (L/F/D/M) debut their fierce Bronze Teeth sound on the first of two hard-ass 12″s for Diagonal. Sustaining the momentum of Powell’s crackshot ‘Club Music’ EP, recently issued on Diagonal, the ‘O Unilaterals’ 12″ yields a trio of modular hardware-honed bangers belying the ongoing significance of steel and flesh. On the A-side they yoke rampant, fleshly pulses to a roiling industrial techno rhythm for 13 minutes of locked-in, foaming acid with little let-up. B-side, the spark-spitting machine funk of ‘Acetone’ gets off somewhere between Dom’s Factory Floor style and an acid-curdled version of Regis’s killer remix for Ike Yard, whilst ‘Glass Tooth’ steps lively with flailing electric blue fuzz and diamond-cut momentum. Crafty DJs will be in their element with these beasts – top stuff from Diagonal once again.
