“Music feeds our emotions and gives sustenance to our souls. It feeds the functions until they turn fat and finally become so big that they seem to exist outside our own body, taking us into their shelter. The emotions build walls that determine the borders of our consciousness and colour the way we feel and experience our surroundings. This means that music caresses those primitive senses buried deep in our memory: the bottomless melancholy of the blue moments, the flashing hype of happiness, the burning sensation of sexual desire, and finally that unexplainable, overwhelming longing for an unknown eternity. It is not far out at all to say that music is pure magic.
The philosopher Plato (427-347 BC) said that learning something is essentially the same as returning something into one’s mind from one’s memory. You could say the same of emotion. The emotional life of a child is known to be colourful and uncluttered. The glorious joy of a child can turn into terrifying rage or irrational terror in a millisecond. The emotional spectrum of a mature adult, so we assume, is a great deal more sophisticated than that of a child. The lived life of an adult contains all manner of hurt and joy and therefore the adult reflects these memories in their behavior. For example, the melancholy of a child is purer and more simple than the aching melancholy of an man who is thankful for his life while he weathers the stormy seas on his journey.
So, what does this all have to do with the music of the band JESSE? Well, in the same way that a professional orchestra grows up with its audience and is able to sense when the time is right to move from the bright colours and bold movements to more subtle tones and pastel shades, so JESSE has succeeded most excellently in their quest for further enlightenment. Rich experience from the school of life has resulted in the fine nuances heard on this Music For Emotions 1 record that you hold in your hands. The rakish and even humorous songs of earlier JESSE records are gone. Instead you will hear the bittersweet melancholy of the empty highway or the shore at twilight. In terms of arrangement and style, JESSE now paint from a broad palette, taking a profound step towards the new age, jazz, world fusion, tribal and adult-oriented genres.
As you will notice, this record is dedicated to an adult who understands the melancholy ennobled by the lived life. To a person who might have many miles in his odometer, but whose eyes are bright and whose mind is peaceful.
