Following his recent release on Hayes, Quelza drops a distinctive four-tracker for Vault. The title track sets the scene for what is an unconventional release. Centred on a stripped back rhythm, its cavernous sound scapes teem with found sounds and dissected percussive licks. “Kraken Maldive” is based on a rolling, looped groove, but here too Quelza weaves in abstract sounds. “Melting Cards” sees him again put a focus on experimentation, with an insistent rhythm soaked in acrid 303s and jarring sounds. “Funny, Not Really” is a continuation of this unusual approach, as eerie, unsettling laughter is filtered over a jacking techno rhythm.
