Hexagon is one of Boris Bunnik’s many aliases, and he reserves it for his ambient and experimental releases. It is also one of his least prolific projects, and Territories is the first Hexagon since 2013. It’s been worth the wait though; the title track kick starts the release with a moody, frazzled bass and clipped beats, before “Pitchblack” brings the listener into a more typical Hexagon sound, where cavernous sound scapes hang heavy in the air like storm clouds. “Continuum” is in a similar vein, albeit underpinned by tweaked acid, but best of all is “Systematic Repetition”. Like an update of Speedy J’s classic “De: Orbit”, it microscopic bleeps and gentle melodies bring the listener back to stark beauty of ‘intelligent techno’.
