It’s been over 30 years since Frank De Wulf set up the B-Sides series, which he said at the time was designed to create ‘mixing possibilities’ that ‘contain popular and stimulating rhythms’. “Magic Orchestra” was one of the first tracks to be released in that series. Like its original release in 1990, this new set of remixes is designed to cater for dance floor demand, albeit in a more evolved form. On Luke Slater’s ‘Live Jack Edit’ as Planetary Assault Systems, this contemporary approach manifests itself in the form of a lean, linear groove. Meanwhile, Slater opts for a different approach on the ‘Vortex’ version. Led by an angular, steely rhythm, this interpretation sees mysterious synth lines bubbling up through the arrangement – a sound that’s as otherworldly as de Wulf’s own early productions.
