It’s no coincidence that the title track on the latest DJ Vague release from Night Slugs affiliate Helix is called “Freakout”. A seemingly non-stop barrage of snares sets the backdrop for buzzing sirens and repetitive tonal stabs. The pace is just as hectic on “Duty”, with the emerging producer dropping frenetic drum patterns and rattling percussion. “2” is more sedate, and takes inspiration from deeper techno sounds. This is audible on its hypnotic chords, snaking Detroit rhythm and crisp drums. Leonce’s take on the title track isn’t as musical, but its drums rumble and roll and the bass has a menacing feeling, like Suburban Knight’s nocturnal approach. It marks a sombre end to a release that started in frenetic mode.
