BMCCW is a new project from Styles Upon Styles regulars Brendon Moeller, Clay Wilson and Certain Creatures. Spectrum is the project’s first outing, and sees the extended combo delving into the murky world of out-there techno. In practice, that means thunderous beats, sub-heavy basslines, horror-influenced textures and psychedelic electronics. It’s a formula that means for interesting – if occasionally intense – listening, with all three tracks sounding ready-made for dark rooms at five in the morning. Our pick is probably the acid-flecked bounce of “Spectrum 3” – a kind of intense take on early bleep records – though “Spectrum 1” is not far behind.

“If this is your first time experiencing Gut Nose, prepare for the following: furtive anxiety, jaundiced eyes, a shortness of breath and an over-racked nervous system. The New York born producer has concocted a blunted and dilapidated strain of house music that puts biters to shame with his debut 12” – Vicetopia – for Styles Upon Styles.

Influenced by his life in a windowless studio (from which he was recently booted due to rent hikes) and composed entirely of battered wax and living tech, Vicetopia crumbles and thrives under an asphalt-infused haze. This is the score for mutant, cannibalistic pigeons struggling to escape a radioactive wasteland of skeletal brownstones and seething subway tunnels. Vicetopia doesn’t give a fuck about your soundsystem, snapbacks, or overpriced parties. Vicetopia is a shaman of a species left to survive after the carnage has passed, leaving scores of wack producers to ferment in techno’s vast and unforgiving graveyard.

This is the first salvo from Gut Nose. The second will come in extended form this summer.
