The new imprint for Stroboscopic Artefacts: Terzo Giorno – or Third Day – by Italian producer Donato Dozzy. It is an EP of great textural dexterity, traversing the moving and the misanthropic.
First track ‘Il Canto Della Maga’ presages the onset of Part II’s kick drum with mordant wind chimes, tinkling outside a house of pain and disturbance. The chimes reverberate around impressions of capacious depth – a distant factory whirring, lorries creeping in a tunnel – and that depth is incessantly, resolutely emphatic. And on that goes to ‘…Part II’, an immediate thrust into the deepest corners of techno. You can hear the sweat on the walls, the rumble in the speakers, the almost jubilant high-end synth rubbing against your skin. Vocals and/or metallic manipulation pour in half- way in. And then, as if summoned by the chimes outside the house, cease slowly. The third eponymous track is another made for the floor, and has a reasonably friendly upper line. Do not be fooled, however: a snarling squelch gives way to a scarily saccharine synth, incising with a jab two times a bar. A funkier beat slowly emerges from a distinctly off-beat one, bringing the piece to a natural, if not nice, conclusion. The final track, ‘Sotto Ma Sotto’, comes in like a train with an alarm going off. Its machine-like run, jumpy in tone and beat, is as delicate as its kick is deep. The alarm, meanwhile, fails to err: it is determined and charming, a call for heavenly climes and ecstatic moods. This is a wonderful track, built on insistence and executed with precision.
The chimes having run out of puff, this is a faultlessly incessant record. It is tempo up, both feet to the floor.

Speedy J and Lucy have revealed details of their new collaborative project, Zeitgeber, with a self-titled album due for release in June. The project links together two well-known purveyors of experimentally-tinged techno. Speedy J, real name Jochem Paap, is a veteran producer whose celebrated career stretches back more than two decades. Lucy, AKA Luca Mortellaro, has gained relatively more recent renown as the mind behind Stroboscopic Artefacts, which is where Zeitgeber will come out.
According to a press release, Zeitgeber—the term translates loosely from German to “synchronizer”—has been in the works for 18 months, and it sees the duo “freed of dancefloor considerations” and focused on more abstract sound design. While Stroboscopic Artefacts has already issued full-length albums from Lucy himself as well as Xhin and Dadub, this one will be the first available on 2xLP vinyl (instead of CD), along with the usual digital formats. Like the rest of the label’s output, Dadub will handle mastering duties.

“‘You Are Eternity’ is the third album to be released on Stroboscopic Artefacts and comes from two of the minds who have shaped the label since its earliest days: Dadub. Recorded over a period of two years, but containing fragments and ideas that stretch back a decade ‘You Are Eternity’ has been mixed together to form a continuous piece rather than twelve discreet tracks. The effect? An immersive journey that encompasses the descriptors brutal, ferocious, ambient and aqueous. It would be easy to describe the album’s structure as that of two halves, but it’s not that simple. The structure that Dadub has developed is cyclical at its most compliant, and elliptical at its most oblique. Within these forms the sounds that emerge run the gamut of electronic music. ‘Existence’ and ‘Unbroken Continuity’ explore futuristic, atmospheric states. ‘Path’ swaggers with rippled dub. Embedded into ‘Truth’ is a polemic sample of Henry Waxman questioning Alan Greenspan. And the same record houses ‘Transfer’, a staunch cut that’s more than fortified to do some damage.
In the studio Dadub’s process is nothing short of alchemical. Their characteristic sound originates from entirely digital sources, but their sound treatments reanimate this raw material filling it with warmth and human emotion. The source loops and synthesised lines are run through countless channels and complex chains of effects to arrive at a destination unrecognisable from the points of origin. Dadub are true sound materialists.
Knowing that Dadub place so much emphasis on process, it’s all the more interesting to hear their collaborations with other artists and ‘You Are Eternity’ is graced by fellow SA cohort Edit Select, the sound experimenter Øe and Ninja Tunes stalwart King Cannibal. It is indeed King Cannibal who teamed up for the album’s most ferocious cut ‘Transfer’. Whereas ‘Experience’ ft. Øe is a hazy slither of atmospherica. And the only straight kick of the entire record is to be found on the track with the most elusive subject matter, ‘Death’ ft. Edit Select, a collaborative elegy on the ultimate unknown. ‘You Are Eternity’ tends towards spaces that are undefined, that are unquantifiable – this album is a foray into Jenseits.
The album title hints at the almost spiritual origins of the album, Dadub’s search for music that goes further, that spreads away from the confines of the time and place in which we find ourselves, music that seeps into the cavern of the eternal. Tucked into ‘Vibration’, the very first track, is a sample of the Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He leans close and says: Music is a spiritual gift, and those who misuse it, die young. Sage words. ‘You Are Eternity’ is a record that refuses to take any chances, Dadub are clearly producers intent on being around for quite some time.” Clare Molloy

4. Dscrd – Interitum
5. Sendai – Without The Written Word (Part 1)
6. Sendai – Without The Written Word (Part 2)
7. James Ruskin – Cabin Fever
8. James Ruskin – Cast Down
SASTE004 is the fourth release in the Stellate Series: sounds gathered from the experimental frontiers and outer edges of electronic music. For each Stellate Series release two tracks are created by four different producers. Collected together here are eight tracks from the periphery of electronic music.Stellate 4 brings together the visions of L.B. Dub Corp, Dscrd, Sendai and James Ruskin. The tracks stem from the most disparate sources and are products of incomparable processes, yet, all four outfits have created music brimming with questions about spatial relationships. The eight tracks emerge as part-soundscapes, part-structures with which to explore our darkest selves and our deepest questioning.
L.B. Dub Corp opens Stellate 4 with ‘Choctaw Dub’. With this reference to the Choctaw Native Americans the track situates itself at the point of friction between ancient wisdom and the realities of modern western living. Within this enormous cavern ‘Choctaw Dub’ commands a huge architectural space where heady, ecstatic noise whirls in the distance, syncopated claves chatter in the mid-ground and strange echoes reverberate in between. Shifting the frame of reference ‘Indulgent Dub’ is a futuristic moonscape. Dusty beds and pads are interrupted by clangs that tone out of turn, but not out of place.
French five piece Dscrd put their many hands to work and ‘Aedificare’ and ‘Interitum’ emerged. Constructed with great arcs and drops that lead to sonic corridors ‘Aedificare’, the Latin for building, establishing, creating, is the perfect title. Process is also highlighted with ‘Interitum’ where repeating phrases lead the listener through odd structures and along paths that are at once familiar and undefined. Skilfully sound-designed it is just as easy to get lost in ‘Interitum’s details as it is in the grandiose scope of what Dscrd have created.
From ten hands to four: Sendai is the collaboration between Peter Van Hoesen and Yves De Mey. ‘Without the Written Word (Part 1)’ and ‘Without the Written Word (Part 2)’ are fortified with bone-chilling menace. Having dispensed with the written word, all other forms of communication step into the fore: you can’t consult your notes anymore, they’re gone. What you’ve got are your ears and what they get is a vicious assault. Part 1 is an angular meeting of high-pitched shrills and synthesized screeches. Part 2 is a slab of drone slashed with noise and gnarling bass.
James Ruskin takes care of the final side of Stellate 4 and contrasts the brutalist structures created by Sendai with tracks that channel wide-open spaces and glacial planes. ‘Cabin Fever’ is created with a very refined palette of compressed sounds that unfold with slow precision. ‘Cast Down’ closes the record on a sumptuous note. ‘Cast Down’ is composed of stunning melodies are looped and layered. This is a track to get lost it. It’s a track to dance alone to. It’s a seven minute journey that, by the very same token, is mournful and utterly ecstatic.
The Stellate Series is boxed exquisitely in a round metallic tin which contains two clear 10” vinyls. Each vinyl is separated by a typographic print on recycled paper. The Stellate releases also contain a hand-numbered artwork inlay by Oblivious Artefacts. The entire artwork comprises of four parts which are divided between Stellate 1 through to Stellate 4. Additionally each release contains a unique card with a download code. Each Stellate release is a strictly limited edition of 300. The entire Stellate Series was craftily mastered in Berlin by Artefacts Mastering.
