R&S welcomes ALSO to the family, AKA the pairing of Appleblim (Laurie Osbourne ) and Second Storey (Alec Storey) for their killer EP01.

Ever since they first met and bonded over a shared love of Detroit machine rhythms and sleek electronic grooves, the pair have been hard at work on pushing their creative boundaries to the limit, never content to take the easy route – as Laurie explains “if that means broken rhythms, and untraditional melodies then so be it.. There’s so many people making sonically ‘correct’ or refined 4×4 music, we just wanted to explore everything other than that, whilst still keeping the dance floor moving.”

These heavy studio / live loose jams sessions have borne truly verdant musical fruit in the form of this debut release – opener Sid’s Conundrum sets the pulse racing with it’s uptempo cyborg funk – juddering bass and bleeping synth squiggles, while Ashford Swaiths leads with a heavyweight bass rhythm – sizzling emotive pads and tripped out hi-freq arpeggios. Dive Prophets closes things out with a spiralling airy chords cascading over slurping bass and stuttering, stop/start percussion that confounds and delights.

ALSO is pan genre, pan generational, emotive electronic music at its best… truly something special and a fine addition to R&S rich heritage of forward thinking dancefloor sonic artistry.

Further to his lovely ‘Shaker Notes’ LP, Paul White ‘fesses three stoned, blue new cuts for R&S. Combined they make for a very smart stand-alone release revealing a shadier corner of White’s sound between the dubwise meditation of ‘Running In A Rainy Day’; the brooding Reese bass and parched bump of ‘Sahara Deserts’; and an outstanding deviation into psychedelic doom metal/industrial with the ricocheting rimshots, iron-clad guitar riffs and streaking synth dynamics of ‘I Call You’.

Fresh off the back of the collaboration with Falty DL on Ninja Tune, Shanghai Den makes a debut on legendary Belgian imprint R&S Records with EP1. Opening cut ‘The Sun’ is complex and never allows us to settle, developing a swinging beat with sweeping pads and juddering bass throbs to then suddenly grind to a halt and change direction completely. On the flip ‘Vale W. Group’ is another strand of esoteric electronic production, extending over big bass hits, repeating fragmented samples and huge, searing chords.

The past two releases by Alex Smoke have seen the Glaswegian make a big splash in the noisy pool that’s R&S Records, but throughout all tracks on this EP there’s the subtlest of synth-pop motifs centred inside a hard outer shell of techno. The wet acid and half-broken beats of “Green Man” sound like a futuristic combination of a Sisters Of Mercy instrumental mixed with Thom Yorke-style vocals funnelled into a circular Alex Smoke rhythm, while there’s an Egyptian feel to the light tech house of “LSD”. “Tommy Knockers” is the EP’s high energy dance track, with detuned synths creating a melodic havoc in the background while “Oni” again remains on a Middle Eastern tip, this time with flecks of rave and a big serving of industrial atmospheric and percussion.
