Initially revealed in an extensive interview in this month’s issue of The Wire, PAN have now outlined full details of KOCH, the next album from UK-based experimental producer Lee Gamble who provided two of the label’s most widely-acclaimed records in Diversions 1994-1996 and Dutch Tvashar Plumes. Both those records played extensively with ideas of musical memory, with Diversions taking old jungle cassettes and subjecting them to extreme digital processing, and Dutch Tvashar Plumes providing 10 spectres of his own musical ideas.

According to a press release from PAN, Gamble’s next LP will take the form of a double album, and this time sees him “constructing a future after time spent deconstructing the past,” diving “even deeper to reveal a singular and intimate musical vantage point, shifting to approaching music as projection, state, hallucination, an other place.” In an interview with Resident Advisor, Gamble elaborated on the LP, explaining that KOCH is made of material made throughout the past few years, and is partly an attempt to create “a record that can be a home listening experience and one that I can take out to places like Berghain,” but that also continues his interest in “hallucination, memory, phantasm, deconstruction.” The album will be preceded by an EP called Kuang to be released on PAN next month

Returning to PAN for the first time since 2011’s 19-minute sound piece How Wheeling Feels When The Ground Walks Away, New York-based conceptual artist James Hoff presents Blaster. Based around an intriguing concept to say the least, Blaster is described as a “document of his explorations of computer viruses as agents within the composition process,” using the computer virus of the same name to “infect” 808 rhythms and construct all-new shapes out of the resulting audio mulch. As you might expect from such a concept, the resulting audio is extreme to say the least; glitchy, abrasive and wildly unpredictable, each of the eight tracks splutter and misfire like a jammed machine gun. While PAN’s recently released Miseri Lares from Valerio Tricoli showed the label’s more delicate experimental side, Blaster is very much PAN in full on sonic assault mode.

With his star in rapid ascent what with releases on Keysound and Tectonic, Beneath broadens his remit from the more funky-influenced material of the last few years to doff a cap to his home town of Sheffield. “Bored 2” definitely sports some of the clanging experimentation of the bleep-era Warp releases, albeit shot through with the sophistication of modern production. “Occupy” may move with slithering steppers rhythms, but there’s still a bit of LFO heft to the square wave bassline, while “One Blings” has a curious sideline in micro house with the catchy melodic twirls that hop around in the more typically bleak surroundings of a Beneath production.

The story of Chris Douglas has a few holes in it. He’s been making music since the late ’80s, with his first record appearing in 1992. Since then he’s released and performed under names like O.S.T., Harry Rod, Wooli Bodin and Scald Rougish. We know he’s lived in Detroit and has worked with Mike Banks and the late James Stinson, and that he threw ambient techno parties as a teenager in San Francisco. These days, he lives in Berlin. Interviews with him aren’t exactly illuminating. All we’ve really got to go on is the music.

Niaiw Ot Vile is Douglas’s fourth release as Dalglish, and it’s a world unto itself. Just look at the title, or try to pronounce it. Track names like “Ciaradh” and “Oidhche” are Scots Gaelic, while “Noscriu” seems to pop up in Catalan, French and Italian texts. Urban Dictionary tells me “Sclunt” has a very aggressive meaning (you could even say demeaning), while “Donsfe” seems to have no meaning at all. As with Autechre or Aphex Twin, the words used to title these pieces of abstract music are themselves abstract. Non-words that sound like real words, mash-ups of half-forgotten languages, phonetic spelling, dropped vowels—it all challenges any straight-forward interpretation, pulling instead on instinct and memory without forcing any conclusion.

The tracks on Niaiw Ot Vile embody the same idea. Musically, they all fall into one of two loose camps. On one hand, you’ve got the dissonant, more rhythmically adventurous tracks (“Venpin,” “Noscriu”), where layers of noisy percussion coalesce into overwhelming wholes. Others, like “Set Nuin” and “Oidhche,” are far more minimal and ambient, floating along like Eleh or Stars Of The Lid. “Ciaradh,” which arrives half way through the album, sees both sides meet in the middle to beautiful effect. On all of them, Douglas leaves his stamp, a particular type of chord progression that he’s repeatedly drawn to, sometimes covered over by frantic percussion or synthesiser bleeps, sometimes left to stand alone, delicate and exposed.

It seems foolish to draw any kind of conclusion about an album as self-consciously open-ended as this. In a way, it’s like the aural equivalent of Ad Reinhart’s black “ultimate” paintings—a purely aesthetic exercise, shorn of all subject matter. We have no choice but to take it as we find it.

MOHAMMAD is a chamber music trio consisting of Coti K (contrabass), ILIOS (oscillators) and Nikos Veliotis (cello). Based in Greece, Mohammad make long form work drone works that explore the lower end of the frequency spectrum whilst retaining an intense emotional capacity. The results are monumental slow moving physical blocks of sound, both daunting and musical. The sheer weight of these recordings is impressive, the interplay of the musicians and instruments staggering, this end result being an album rich with immense harmonious abstraction which highlights years of dedication to their unique path.
