Our first release of 2014 is a split 12 featuring a newcomer act and a veteran name, both new to the Pampa circle, and both of whom manage to adhere to our sound while at the same time widening it. Ricoshëi is Nikko Gibler and Jake Patrick, based out of Hitland Studios in Los Angeles. “Perfect Like You” is one more pop-tinged numbers to appear on our label, with breathy vocals yearning for the next best thing, sublimated by the ambient tendencies glowing in the tracks atmosphere. For all their rampant, nerdy analog fetishization, the duo still knows that emotionnot fancy gearis the key to connecting with listeners. Hardcore Pampa followers might recognize this one, as DJ Koze previewed it late last year in his XLR8R podcast, and now you, too, have the opportunity to snuggle up with your very own copy. This is the kind of song that makes you want to close your eyes, not to sleep, but to abandon perception to your ears alone fuelling your hearts imagination. The flipside is a new cut from Berlin-based DJ/producer Dave DK, short for his real name, David Krasemann, which sounds a bit like crazy man. And those already familiar with his work know hes got a bit of that madness-bordering-on-genius thing going on. OK, maybe thats an overstatement, but Woolloomooloo speaks for itself. Just have a listen and submerge yourself into this majestic cyborg aquarium of a track, and within moments youll feel the hypnotic, euphoric, nostalgic and anti-ageing qualities. Side effects may include dizziness. (But probably only if you are standing on the vinyl while its spinning.) What a start into 2014!!

It’s been almost exactly 12 months since Michael Baumann last put something out under the Soulphiction alias, a garishly coloured 12″ on his own Philpot label. For a producer of his quality, that’s far too long. “When Radio Was Boss”, then, is a rare treat. The title track sees him exploring his trademark sound, a mix of heavy analogue, acid-house inspired bass, dense, Latin-influenced percussion, quirky vocal samples and razor-sharp strings. As usual, the blend is just right. “Maybachswagger” is, if anything, even better, delivering an atmospheric chunk of clandestine late night deepness built around shuffling samba beats, foreboding chords and female vocal scat singing. Impeccable stuff, then… as always!

German veteran DJ Koze impressed earlier this year with the Amygdala album, his fourth in total. Here, Pampa presents the first of what we assume will be a series of remix EPs. Excitingly, there’s a rare remix from Matthew Herbert, who weighs in with a superb version of vocal cut “Magical Boy”. His version, built around typically swinging drums and unlikely percussion samples, is deliciously sweet, wrapping the sublime vocal in sampled jazz horns, bubbling electronic bass and atmospheric chords. Efdemin provides a really rather lovely, ultra-deep house version of album highlight “La Duquesa” (thinking touchy-feely Rhodes, atmospheric strings and evocative electronics), before Koze’s own instrumental of “Magical Boy” completes an excellent package.

Die Vögel is German for the birds, but those who’ve been following Pampa Records from the beginning know that this duo isn’t some Schlager tribute to that hippie folk band. Not counting last fall’s excellent remix for Dntel, it’s been nearly two full years since we’ve heard from Die Vögel. Is something afowl? Not to worry: Jakobus Durstewitz and Mense Reents still flock together and their new EP is ready to hatch, just in time for summer. And they’ve got quite an interesting guest with them this time… The Chicken begins with that familiar Pampa swagger, all clickety clackety in 3-D, and soon we hear the extended howl of some kind of beaked instrument, searing into your skull, as a looming voice dares you to try to look a chicken in the eye. Is that Vincent Price? No, it’s famed shoe-eating director Werner Herzog. (But yes, this release could prove itself to be no less than Die Vögel’s Thriller.) Further layers of this hypnotic laser cry enter and exit, beckoning the sunrise, but you, my friend, are captive to its trance for the entire nine minutes. After you pull the feathers out of your mouth from that existentialist affair, turn to page B for Mesmerize: This one is easier on the psyche, both majestic and gentle, with legato horns and strings massaging your mood. Neapolitan sherbet for open-airs and open ears. So there you have it, perhaps the definitive Pampa 12, bearing that dependable turkey logo, credited to Die Vögel, named after to the world’s most populous domesticated bird. Another coop from DJ Koze and company.
