Always one to confront the grittier underbelly of the world, the man called Kevin Martin returns under his guise as The Bug, with the 2 x 10″ Filthy EP. Kicking things off on an appropriate foot is everyone’s favorite gap tooth grin sporting rapper from Detroit, the Adderall admiral himself, Danny Brown coming in with backing from King Midas Sound’s Kiki Hitomi for the NSFW anthem “Freakshow”.

Next up on the version is the recent club smashing monster that is “Dirty”, as premiered via Kode 9’s “Rinse 22” mix, smashed by Coki/Loefah at DMZ, relentlessly promoted by Mala and pegged as most heard track at this years Movement Festival in Detroit. Featuring long time Bug collaborator Flowdan… “Dirty, fuck that murky”. Finally all the leaked radio rip demand can be filled.

To round it off is a double hit of ”under mi skeng teng, mi under mi skeng teng” madness. Daddy Freddy comes in hard on “Kill Them”, while Flowdan has penned the ultimate live Bug battle cry anthem that is “Louder”.

Add to this, the retina scorching, headf-ck, soundclash artwork, beautifully illustrated by Zeke Clough (Of Skull Disco fame..), and you have a mercilessly produced mindbomb.

All this is prep work for the forthcoming “Angels & Devils” full length… featuring the likes of Death Grips, Gonjasufi, Grouper, Warrior Queen, Inga Copeland, Flowdan, Daddy Freddy, and more.

Yes, yes, we know what you’re thinking. It’s a live album, and when are those ever very exciting? But just remember that they really can be, and trust us when we say that this one really, truly is. Like a modern day Live at Leeds, like the benevolent, neon twin of Live Evil, Jaga Jazzist’s wondrous new record is just that; a brilliant album on its own terms. It’s a psychedelic Bond soundtrack twisting and turning from the stage, propelling the listener forward on an epic emotional voyage. At times it seems to explode from the speakers in pure, exuberant colour, making you wonder if you’ve recently developed synesthesia. It moves with unrestrained ease from quiet reflection to cinematic, widescreen thunder, from Sound of Music pastoral joy to pulsing jazz chase sequences… and it makes you wonder why more of the music you hear isn’t quite so completely affecting.

Jaga Jazzist had long wanted to work with an orchestra, and when the British radio DJ Fiona Talkington introduced them to the Britten Sinfonia, they leapt at the chance to collaborate. The Barbican’s Chris Sharp promised to stage the results, and the team set about writing the work from scratch. Jaga wanted to make each musician feel like a central part of the performance, and this philosophy paid off in full. The music is full of exuberance and passion, each player becoming an equal part of a startlingly purposeful hive-mind.

Jaga have always taken a rigorous approach to their art, and they wanted to use the opportunity afforded by the album to push their own creativity forward. As such, they broke new ground personally. “Mathias’ trumpet solo on ‘Bananfluer Overalt’ is probably my favourite moment on the album,” says the group’s writer and creative driving force Lars Horntveth. “He really shines here and has the space and time to improvise in a way he hasn’t been able to do before with Jaga alone.”

That says a lot about this brilliant, unique record. It’s not often that an album comes along that offers so much. Its quieter moments could equal Shostakovich’s explorations of mortality, its full throttle thrusts match the visceral thrill of any young guitar band. We’d suggest that you won’t be disappointed in a listen, and that it might just change your day for the better.

Having tinkered quite brutally with These New Puritans’ Attack Music, and produced some truly beautiful, electronically affected euphoria in 2012’s Pray and S&G, Deco Child (aka south Londoner Alex Lloyd) is back. He’s spent his time since his last EPs developing a new, intimate feel to his music. It’s a startling turn, one which initially stupefies – as all positively charged, emotive music should – though once the astonishment is allowed to settle, what we’re left with is Lloyd’s most accomplished collection to date. It’s a brand new take on electronic music, embodied into a record that’s equal parts grace and guile.

Opener “Skinless Pt 1” plays off the subtle compositional simplicity of Nils Frahm’s Screws and the gentle dexterity of Sigur Rós, and the result is as plainly cinematic and softly orchestral as the haunting minimalism of Ninja Tune label mate Jason Swinscoe. A ghostly, piano-lead intro gives way to a thudding, minimal beat and plunging bass, before bowing to a sun-flecked crescendo and a trademark, heart-pumping blow-out of euphoric strings, electronics and vocals. There’s then “Heartbeats” – a silken palpitation fuelled by elegiac soundbites (“Sometimes my heart starts racing really fast,”) lightly placed upon arresting and languorous keys. The whole thing performed with a nimble ability picked up during the ‘Child’s upbringings in electronica.

“Skinless Pt 2” meanwhile, with its spectral hanging notes and sweeping grandeur, is arguably the EP’s doleful chef-d’œuvre, and is decorated with Ben Dodson’s wistful vocal. Like an aggrieved groan of a floating spectre, transfixed by the teary-eyed waltz of a once beloved seen only through the fogged globules of a dangling chandelier. As you can tell, this an artist with a vision very much his own. “The less you change, the harder it becomes,” the song grieves, before turning agitated; aggressive, even, around the four-minute mark, as frenzied sirens and acerbic breaks invade its innate tranquility. As schizophrenic as it is unequivocally stunning, vocally there are glimpses of Antony and glimmers of Patrick Watson located within this flittering, seraphic thing.

Having already garnered plays on Radio 1 and 6Music and cemented himself as a favourite of Lauren Laverne’s, this is a welcome return for Deco Child. This is a release teetering upon the meeting point of the worldly and the ethereal, the organic and the electronic, with the techniques of each seamlessly intermingled with one another. It’s the meeting of aged learning and a new and optimistic outlook; a meeting that’s irrefutably inspiring to the ear that decides to lend itself.
