The world of M_Rec refocuses on unassuming and dedicated dancefloor tracks with this release on the original Ltd. imprint by british producer and sound engineer Coefficient. Steering away from the saturated world of big and harsh techno, Coefficient concentrates on the craft of reviving and re-exploring archetypical mind-altering techno, rooted halfway between the American midwest and the heyday of british rave culture. The opening ‘Subsurface’ takes advantage of a groovy refrain to showcase uplifting drum programming and shadowy soundscapes. A great set opener to put the room in the right mindset. Things get a little darker with ‘Tesseract’. While the intricate patterns and basslines play the integral part in the track, there are intriguing melodies interplaying to make things sexier and affectively trippy. On the flip side, EP title track ‘Blood Red’ is a more maximal experiment, definitely meant to shake things up. Throughout this joint the synths get bigger and state-inducing, while the bass drum keeps things forward driving. It’s a traditional loop-driven track that belongs in the apex of a proper techno set. Closing track ‘Point of Departure’ rediscovers British leftfield electronica and celebrates the early morning hours of outdoor raves. It’s a track dedicated to the last few people standing, rich of melody and delays.

Juho Kahilainen is pretty good at giving labels a kick start, not only was he responsible for the first M_Rec Grey release, but he also helped inaugurate the now firmly established, and well respected, Prologue. Here, the Fin provides his second release for M_Rec’s sub-label, opening with throbbing bass pulses, Jean Michel Jarre “Oxygen II” styled synths and flutters of crackly noise. Bass pulses in “Xemx” take on more of an acid shape that’s reminiscent to early Plastikman, which can also be said about “Coronal Loop”, while “The Fuck Up” is Kahilainen providing a trippy curve ball to an otherwise linear, deep-driving EP.

“Go. I don’t need you anyway. You were only holding me back. You, with your rigid ways and impenetrable exterior; I’m not like you. I need movement, fluidity. Freedom. Expression. Feelings. I need to be alive. This emotionless, glass-eyed view of the world that’s your vision. And you held me to it, like some sort of prisoner. Yes, that’s what you are. You’re shackles. Iron bars disguised as safety. You thought I would stay with you forever, in the limbo of that grounded shrinking quadrant, drip-fed. Your pet. Your lab rat. For a while there I totally lost myself, sinking further and further under your sedation. Life became colourless. And then there was nothing. Grey Series 04 comes from the farthest corner of Eastern Europe courtesy of Ukrainian techno pioneer, photographer and designer Stanislav Tolkachev. Like the sullen eerie beauty of his black and white photography, Tolkachev’s music explores the darker, surreal fringes of electronic music in its purest, rawest state. Retroactive seams run through his audio and visual output to date from the grainy analogue qualities of his Detroit-facing sound, through to the classic stills that emboss his discography. They are almost one and the same, both challenging and re-contextualising the past with modern sentiment, agendas and hidden meanings pursing with intrigue and ambiguity. ‘Depth of light’ sees Tolkachev plot more intoxicating, caustic dream sequences, translating fitful night terrors into a diverse and multifunctional EP. Beginning with the woozy title track we confront fears (“Like a cat’s shadow”) and anxieties (“Break something that breaks you”) on the feverish A-side, before flipping over for reserved reprieve (“No home no flag”) and acid-washed revenge (“Don’t shit on your own doorstep”). And then we awake. Tired, sweaty, but satisfied.
