Following the frenetic, rhythmic experiments of the Ripatti 12” series, Vladislav Delay returns with his first ambient album in over a decade. ‘Visa’ is a thing of immense, absorbing beauty – harking back to his classic albums for Chain reaction and Mille Plateaux, extending 6 longform pieces over an hour of heady dub reductions. And in the fine tradition of some of the best albums, ‘Visa’ was borne out of serendipity – Ripatti was denied entry to the United States and was forced to cancel an entire tour. Suddenly left with unhindered time and a surplus of creative energy, he produced this material in a span of just two weeks. As he explains: “a valve broke open… and I collected what came out the pipes.” ‘Visa’ is complex yet immersive – never fading into the background, instead building layered soundscapes that shift and build before switching direction, changing focus. It’s a technique that Ripatti has crafted and honed over the years – almost 20 years in fact since his shocking ‘The Kind Of Blue’ debut for his own Huume imprint, and here once again subtly augmented via industrial noises and dream-like melodic loops. Made almost entirely with analog hardware, the album was designed to be listened to at high volume and in full detail – and is perhaps the most substantial and rewarding Delay release since ‘Demo(n) Tracks’ over a decade ago…

If there was a Top Of The Pops for DIY electronics, then St Leidal the 2nd‘s slice of sun-kissed exotica heaven would probably be number one for months to come. Up and coming Hungarian producer, András Leidal had explored practically everything between shoegaze and acid before starting his solo project, St Leidal the 2nd in 2009 – he is part of Wedding Acid Group’s trio, whose anthology was released on Farbwechsel this past spring.

Following a couple of self-released EPs and a refined release on 8ounce records, Future Tiberian Baths is András’s most accomplished work to date. Similarly to St Leidal’s previous works, it is a collection of sample laden, beat driven songs that sound like listening to an octopus jamming to a sleazy 80s teenage movie theme from the inside of an aquarium. These eight originals are all built from an almost transparent fabric that melts both your mind and your body, recalling the best moments of vaporwave. What makes St Leidal the 2nd stand out though is his effortless, almost minimalistic approach that lets him fuse hopeful melancholy and nostalgia with an array of influences with suave ease and confidence.

One of the UK’s canniest labels does it again with Happy Meals’ debut album of sensual, spellbinding lo-fi pop. Sounding like the work of Saada Bonaire’s long-lost slacker offspring, ‘Apéro’ is actually the produce of two Glasgow-based artists, Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook, who originally hail from the Scottish borders. Suzanne sings in a unique mix of French and Scottish, occasionally sharing the mic with Lewis over the course of six songs taking the 100% Silk/NNF pop aesthetic and psych-dub freedom of Peaking Lights to a more ambiguous, enchanted headspace. It’s all top notch stuff, from the nine minute celestial sashay of ‘Crystal Salutation’ thru the off-kilter Maria Minerva-isms of ‘Electronic Disco’ or the chiming boogie of ‘Altered Images’ to blown-out dub-pop sweetnuss in ‘The Age Of Love’, and the Balearic acid of ‘Le Voyage’. Top notch.

Having spent plenty of previous tape-spooling minutes shored up at Hospital Productions (as well as Opal Tapes, Silvox and More Records), Exoteric Continent return once more with their gritty, industrial-flavoured techno that edges more towards sonic dread than dance music. The tightly-pressed rhythms tumble out in unforgiving arrangements that lay monochrome textures on heavy and let the drum machines call the shots. There’s space of course for more contemplative production as well, but it still comes daubed in battleship grey for the darker kind of hardware head. That there is so much atmosphere and tension in the music tells you just how skilled the Barcelona-based duo are in their craft.

Tim Engelhardt is back on PMP with a 4-track EP, following last years’ ‘All Eyes On You’, which was quite successful. He relies on his signature elements on this release: Emotive melodies, rich basslines, vibrant and fluffy percussion and elaborate atmospheres.
The title track ‘It Matters To Me’ starts with sounding pretty empty before the bassline kicks in and a bouncy string-loop arises, but continuously evolves to a summery breeze of jazzy rhodes licks, expressive strings, a tiny but effective filtered saw sequence and tender piano chords, which will aid the record to stay in your hearts forever. Next up is ‘The Kiss’, which is a beautiful mellow track, where you can really feel Tim’s passion for floating and emotive soundscapes. This track is just perfect for every sundown you will witness this year.
The b-side starts with the powerful ‘About A Moment’, a bass-heavy record which portrays just a situation, a moment the listener should witness too, that’s what this track is about.. fall into frenzy and feel for yourself.
Rounding up the release, he recorded the track ‘Teardrop’, whose swirling synth lines and heavy baselines are simply capturing and hypnotizing you, before you wake up in the break, which sounds a bit wistful and full of desire, just to get kicked back into the actual main theme of the record. A track to get lost in.
As a digital bonus, he made the track ‘Too Far From You’, that is a far slower gem than the other ones. It starts with unusual glitches and percussions, which, at least in the first seconds, don’t make any sense in relation the groove, but they adapt quite nice during the song, which has also got heavily edited vocals, sung by Philipp Ludwig.
All in all, a very artistic release with sense for the perfect groove, lush melodies and rich basses.
