sonofdistantearth finally releases his debut Parachute EP, exploring a raw and textured blend of techno ideas drawing from the epic melodic techno of US artists such as Levon Vincent whilst evoking the desk-crushing saturation of the very same East Coast noise-techno scene.

Proper warehouse jams for serious heads, the epic ‘GAZA2’ kicks off proceedings with a deep, thundering drum loop washed over by high-rise pads and twinkling, crystal melodies.

‘Idyll’ comes roaring out of the blocks on a serious techno liberation mission. Bone-shaking low-end and clattering, rough-up hats crash through a wall of arped-to-hell synth-warmth. A 9 minute mind-bender for underground freaks.

On the flip there’s a special 45 cut of ‘Koan’, a thrifty bongo-techno number that hammers home loop-world theory and evokes the distant, time-bent world from whence SODE came.

Lobster Theremin present the vinyl debut of yet another talent in the shape of Budapest’s Imre Kiss. Born with a cosmic identity that sees his sound referencing everyone from 80’s film composers through to The Hague sound of Legowelt and Orgue Electronique, Imre manages to squeeze every ounce out of the every sound he uses whilst simultaneously absorbing the user into another world.

Following on from his mainly soundtrack and ambient-focused Midnight Wave tape album for Farbwechsel, ‘Raw Energy EP’ sees him apply his craft to a range of electronic works that aim just that bit closer to the dance floor. Although Stellar 0102 is anything but danceable, with dusty layers and spooky atmospheres drifting over intense interstellar drones that come rippling from beneath the sheath of textures. Non is filtered into effect with it’s insanely chunky lead synth shimmering to the undulating 707 beat pattern. More hair-raising elements come seething from the wings, building layer upon layer of intensity until the calm falls.

Imre’s passion for the deep is explored on the tranquillised Spellbound. Dragging under the weight of it’s own lethargy, this is a slow-slung jam for the slow movers and deep diggers. If a track was to be it’s title then Raw Energy is that track, riding a relentless arpeggio into a beaming, reddening sunset. This is drive-time techno with the clock running down; pure desperation and angst, hyper-pressurised until the levy breaks. Ending on a very similar note to the start, Belief has us loping along at a steady tempo, brimming on a drug-induced high tinged with paranoia, until all fades to black.

Detroit young gun Rawaat finally steps up with his debut vinyl release for Lobster Theremin. Having carefully honed an inimitable sound that caresses the left-facing corners of house, techno, ambient and beats, this marks the start of what promises to be a very special year for the Mid West talent.

Rawaat’s own DIY tape imprint, Crisis Urbana, simultaneously provided the breeding ground and outlet for ideas and a collective mentallity that is beginning to define a new wave of Detroit producers, and listening to their discography it’s immediately clear where those tape-saturated, cut-and-paste jams found their roots.

Caverns Of Reflection opens the EP with shots of shifting mist and cascading iron strings, drenched in a rain of hazy melancholia. The theme is continued throughout the A-side with Exp 2’s wind-battered textures drifting over saturated analogue drums and a beautifully twitchy and interlocking percussive melody. Motion Sensor finishes the side with an ambient-house-beats combo that throws classic rave tropes and early Warp influences in the pan.. Imagine what you’d actually be hearing after smashing ten pills in a Doncaster club in ’91.

The flip is a straight-up two-headed banger, opening with the floor-crushing Day Laborer. Clattering hats shatter over red-lined bass grooves and a vocal refrain that will carry for days.. Randy snares punch their way into the mix for a guttural assault off-set by the gentle pads ‘n’ clap patting that heal back to life. Huerco S. jumps on remix duties with his shortened H.S. moniker. This is true Detroit-spirited techno thrashed through the clubs of Europe and re-imagined as an extended, looping, psychedelic, strobed-to-fuck techy house number.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about “new age house”, a decidedly tropical take on analogue deep house with distinct influences from classic ambient house and 1980s new age compositions. Here, Lobster Theremin follows in the footsteps of Mood Hut, Confused House and Future Times (amongst others) with a formidably atmospheric EP from Route 8 (AKA producer Gergely Szilveszter Horvath). Opener “Pacific Paradise” is particularly good, offering an enveloping plunge into ocean-deep waters (think dreamy chords and snappy drum machine rhythms). That said, the darker, fuzzier “I Can’t” and “Dry Thoughts” – all bumpin’ beats and subtle melodies – are just as good and demonstrate the Budapest-based producer’s range.
