A Francesco Tristano’s hand behind a set of five killer tracks that conform ‚Piano, Hats & Stabs EP‘, an EP made for open-eared and open-minded listeners. Tristano, virtuoso pianist and composer known for his taste for the electronic and hybrid, has been blowing away dance music-heads for a while thanks to his impressive live sets solo and alongside the likes of Moritz von Oswald and Carl Craig – with whom he recently appeared on a special edition of Boiler Room. Now, Get Physical has the honor to be hosting the musician’s even deeper delve into the world of techno. Inspired by an “ongoing quest to unite the sounds of the acoustic grand piano with electronic synthesizers, sequences and drum loops”, the ‚Piano, Hats & Stabs EP‘ draws from over nine months of studio sessions all the way from Paris and Utrecht to Barcelona and Rome. A tense and reeling monster of a release that would seem aimed at leaving you breathless – and setting dance floors on fire -, you can almost picture Tristano hunched over a grand piano, hammering away like a madman for the five tracks that take us from ‚Dminorloop’ split personality with its build-ups and deconstructions to the driving ‚Sarasani‘, on to ‚Stekker Sound Driver’ decaying bassline and ‚Gaza World Cup’ chest-thumping roll. It all ends on a lighter note with ‚Place on Lafayette’ almost psychedelic keys – actually recorded on Lafayette Place, in Detroit. Techno, Electronica, classical? Its been said a good artist is one who can defy genres and titles, and we’ll be damned if there was a bigger defyer than Francesco Tristano. -“This is, in the words of the great Paul Frick, ‘elektronische Körpermusik’. Dallas producer Brett Johnson’s output may have slowed down in the past few years, but this release for Get Physical shows that he hasn’t lost his ability to craft jacking, stripped back house. “Do It Like This” is led by a powerful, pumping bass and features dissected vocal drops, before leading into a deranged, ravey breakdown. “Amnesia” shows another side to his production approach; a spaced out, beatsy affair, its eerie synth lines float into the ether like plumes of gray smoke. Best of all though is “Still Charged”. It starts with a druggy vocal that asks the author about being ‘back in the game’ and whether still feels ‘charged’? By way of supporting a positive response, Johnson delivers a jerky, insistent rhythm that never stops jacking.

Together with other similar DJ mix series like those of the London Fabric label and ‘DJ Kicks’ on K7!, the format of the ‘Body Language’ Compilations is amongst the last of its kind available on the market. Junior Boys, Modeselektor, Dixon, Matthew Dear, Azary & III, Catz ‘N Dogz, DJ Hell, Jesse Rose and many other artists have, over the past 9 years, contributed to the reputation of the successful series released on Get Physical. Like both of the label co-founders from M.A.N.D.Y before him, DJ T. has, for the second time, been given the chance to lay his hands on the series for the 15th edition. The conceptual approach that DJ T. has taken to this mix is similar to that of his earlier work. Here DJ T. is not content with just fleeting snapshots of a limited style.
