Pearl from RuPaul’s Drag Race is the latest (simultaneously with Violet Chachki) to release an album. Yet this is probably the most unconventional release from the typical Drag Race output. Pearl doesn’t sing, instead only serving as producer of the record. The result is a sublime, deep EDM record that wouldn’t sound out of place at an after-hours club. It’s not mellow, but pounding and bassy. Not melodic, but every bit an engaging and driving album. The music on display here is extremely indicative of a talent we’ve only just begun to see. A number of tracks feature a guest vocalist, but the majority is an instrumental beat-driven journey that is oddly satisfying and beautiful. Highly recommended if you like this kind of music.
