St Etienne Vol 1 marks the debut of French producer HateLate. The title track is something of a love letter to the city of the same name – his hometown, of course – offering a near 10-minute trip into ultra-deep house territory. Loose jazz cymbals, bluesy, St Germain style horns and tear-jerking pianos ride the kind of thickset groove that appears swinging and off-kilter, but still packs a serious punch. It actually sounds like a 21st century update of some of the material from St Germain’s legendary Boulevard set, which is no bad thing. “Bellevue” is dustier, breezier and, if anything, a little looser, with rich Rhodes chords gathered around hustling percussion. As debuts go, it’s rather impressive.
