It is becoming increasingly difficult to categorise releases like Songbirds. Granted, it is released on Rinse, but the range of influences audible on this two-tracker mean it is literally in a world of its own. The title track mixes hyperactive house drums with what sounds like a high-pitched brass section playing away behind some infectious but unintelligible Latino vocals. “Latinman” is not as upbeat, but it does revolve around a similar housey groove and features an interplay between a stuttering male vocal and a coquettish female singer. Add in some bruising, gnarly bass tones and “Latinman”, like the title track, sounds highly distinctive.
