After the success of the first installment, My Favorite Robot Records unleashes another package of stunning remixes derived from Jori Hulkkonen”’s recent killer album ”’Negative Time””” 2012 was the year that Toronto”’s My Favorite Robot Records really took the leap into artist albums, with two amazing long players from Jori Hulkkonen and Fairmont and the seeds sown for the forthcoming, much anticipated Sid Le Rock LP. With a good artist album, there comes the opportunity for a good remix collection and MFRR have certainly not let the chance slide with two amazing remix packages to date of Hulkkonen and Fairmont featuring production heavyweights such as Ewan Pearson, Phonogenic, Ryan Crosson and Of Norway to name just a few. Now there is a second installment in Jori Hulkkonen”’s ”’Negative Time remixes”’ series that sees four further remixers take the Finnish producers work and rework it in their own image. The EP kicks off with ”’Gonna Track You Down”’ remixed by the US brother/sister duo Knox who delivers a wonderful slice of post dubstep electronica that marries rich sub bass, skittering drum patterns and ethereal vocal snippets to supreme effect. Next up Hulkkonen himself rehashes the brilliant ”’Liquid Hologram feat JiiHoo”’ into a pulsing and hypnotic club mix that pulls together elements of house, techno and electro in perfect fusion. The penultimate track sees ”’Do It feat. Olga Kouklaki”’, remixed by man of the moment Maxxi Soundsystem who turns in a blissful, deep and bubbling house mix that is pure aural pleasure. Finally we have Romanian producer and MFRR favourite, The Model who remixes ”’Bass is a Many Splendored Things”’ into a rolling piece of techno elegance with it”’s staccato snares, arp lines and insistent bass, quality stuff. After 5 years Renato is back! Ladies and gentlemen, we are going through an area of turbulence, we ask all passengers to remain seated, with your seatbelts fastened… Anyone whos ever experienced the treacherous descent to Cagliari airport will totally understand Renato Figolis fear of flying, but in contrast to the loudspeaker announcement that introduces Funkoholic, the Sardinian producers album is anything but turbulent the smoothest of takeoffs, superb in-flight entertainment and controlled touchdown make it an early contender for one of 2013s most rewarding listens, not to mention one of AMAM’s strongest entries to date. Renato has been drifting on and off the electronic radar for the best part of eight years since a flurry of releases on Lo Fi Stereo, Gumption and Trapez launched him into prominence. During this timeframe, he also linked up with a teenage Alessio Mereu, who, under Renato’s guidance, learned the ins and outs of production with Logic. Now that Alessio’s label AMAM has built up an international audience over the past few years, it seemed the perfect home for Renato’s new full-length record, his first in five years. Funkoholic closes the loop in a musical sense, allowing Renato the scope to fully realise his potential while setting out a musical doctrine that merges deep techno, funk, dub, jazz and ambience in a truly idiosyncratic manner. The album consists of nine tracks, each linked by elegantly crafted ambient transitions that leave the listener in a state of suspended animation. This constant alternation between inner space and outer space is one of the albums defining features, balancing style and content in equal measures. It also allows Renato to patiently strip down his arrangements something thats not always possible on a single track or EP to reveal the complex internal workings of ideas that have clearly evolved through endless late-night sonic excursions. His music has always sung in a language of its own: the chord progressions, fat, rolling bass lines and quirky rhythms instantly recognisable to anyone acquainted with his sound. Here, though, he takes the formula one step further, inviting jazz guitarist Carlo Ditta and trumpeter Mario Massa to add their virtuosity to the proceedings. In fact, their classy improvisations dominate the opening section of the album, adding an additional dimension to the epic soundscapes of Underpool and the raw, shuffling title track Funkoholic, while Neville Attrees commentary on the double-edged nature of obsession lends anymore a dark, brooding energy. Switching to autopilot, And Again is a fine example of how peripheral elements from one track can slowly move to the foreground to become the central focus of the next, while Buck a Guy returns to classic Figoli territory, turning the screw with a twisting acid loop designed to bounce on through till morning. Renatos in no hurry to tear up the dancefloor, however, as Call One slows things down to a deep, throbbing groove, again utilising Dittas deft finger work in a spontaneous merging of minds that could only emanate from Sardinian shores. Super Lemon Vapor dives even deeper into the subconscious with tripped out metallic FX skipping and sliding through the hidden gateway to a smokers paradise. This all sets the scene for one final push as the twin forces of Morning and Night Express up the tempo in a powerful burst of cyclic energy. Turbulence or not, when Renatos at the controls, the crowd will be out of their seats and dancing in the aisles. Thank you for flying with AMAM and we wish you a pleasant journey…

Continuing Madtech’s exploration of edgier material that reflects the modern house music landscape, Seb Wildblood makes an early entry in his career for the label and captures the vibe of the times, not least on the title track. With a prominent bassline, spooky vocal sample and clean drum arrangement the scene is set for a downbeat kind of deep house that borrows plenty from the world of bass music. “Lusk” is a more lively affair with its fulsome square wave bassline and dynamic balance of chords and snappy beats, although still very much in the warm up end of the party spectrum. Artifact gets mechanical and techy on his remix of Toreki, while Thefft goes for a more hack and slash approach to “Lusk” that chops some of the key elements up nicely.

The second half of the infamous DJ Glen & Vitor Munhoz EP is the remix package, coming to you loaded with four hard hitting interpretations. The first comes from Victor Ruiz under his moniker V-Side. Self-proclaimed as hailing as the son of mother House and father Techno, this remix only solidifies his talent. His remix is somehow even more of a powerhouse than the original with its heavy deep progressive tech strong unyielding enrapturing thrill. The heavy-laden grimy dirty overtones hit just right. The second from Silky is a stripped down titillating tech remix. By losing the excess of electro and exposing the minimal sound, he takes it from a banger to seriously sexy heater all while keeping that badass edge. With spacey overtones cut with sharp percussion its a clean mix and tantalizing trip. The last two remixes come from Re:Axis and Groove Delight, both taking the originals for a twist in techno. The Yoyo interpretation from Re:Axis is heavy in bass and heavier in percussion. From a deep bass heavy track to a total hard hitting foot stomping techno treat all while maintaining that eerie vibe. The last remix from Groove Delight keeps more of that original dub electro sound but takes it straight tech with hard hitting percussion with a faster beat and amped up strikes. Any of these four remixes will shake off the dance floor.
