In the last few years German producer Markus Suckut has built quite a following, thanks to his distinctive, raw and reduced modern techno sound. After several singles on the label, Markus now announces his debut full length, ‘DNA’, on Figure.

Rather prolific with his output of 12’’s and remixes, Suckut’s previous releases on Figure stood out, with tracks like ‘Hunt’ on Figure SPC M really developing his command of intensely focused and powerful kick drums. A true follower and advocate of the more refined side of club techno, he has recently set up his own SCKT label, and travels more and more as a DJ.

‘DNA’ now goes even further in making a statement on his sound. There’s something of the classic German minimal techno lifeblood flowing through this album, and over 11 tracks (8 on the the double vinyl release) we are guided through very precise, tense and effective exercises in basement techno minimalism.

From the moody synths of ‘Path’, a fitting intro to the album, we are then dropped head-first into ‘Dissociation’ where only a handful of elements resting on a weighty kick drum build a certain sci-fi tension. This tension is maintained over the course of the whole album.

Heading into more trippy zones, ‘Dust’ and the acidic jack of ‘Rigid’ both demonstrate Suckut’s skills at telling a story with a very strict economy of elements. As paranoid tension establishes itself as a major theme further still, ‘Shatter’ unfolds in a dreamy, if not rather apocalyptic dub track of the highest order.

‘Doomed’ presents a brief respite from the tunneling bass frequencies, as serene synths float across a smokey backdrop, but then it’s back to business as ‘Stranger’ takes us deeper into the fog with its tripping beauty.

The more aggressive thump of ‘Vibrant’, with its urgent synth voices and dramatic arrangement are pure Suckut – taught, carefully executed and intoxicating on the dancefloor. We are then guided into a more heady, psychedelic mood with ‘Remains’, before the true dub of ‘Places’ eases us down, working glorious space between the groove. Finally the last stand arrives in the form of ‘Mirage’, where an undulating acid line and freakishly- timed percussion shake and rattle around a wonderfully submerged throb.

Markus Suckut shows us his true colours and talents with ‘DNA’ – a very focused, mature and honest portrayal of his take on techno for 2013 and beyond.

Cambridge resident Samuel Emerson Iliffe, aka ill Life, is driven by a penchant for warping things. Akin to warping his sonorous surname into the „ill Life” moniker, he warps formely innocuous techno fare into a clangorous, concussive march of living, breathing percussion. Samuel’s sonics seemingly owe a considerable amount to recent innovations from the likes of Blawan or Perc Trax alumni, however his only fault is taking part in the phenomenon of „synchronous innovation”. Before Karenn coalesced, before Clouds’ newest offerings started being rinsed, ill Life had long since moulded his sound. It is Infinite Machine’s infinite regret to have discovered him so belatedly. But there’s no use crying over spilled trax.
„Ever Decreasing Circles” blasts off right away, employing burrowing sounds, and disgruntled mechanical noise that is ostensibly trying to shrug off the tyranny of the relentless 4/4 pulse, but never quite manages. There is conflict at the core of this track, and by the time the subtle tension of metallic dub stabs sets in, and immersive quality of the pitched-down, k-hole vox ruminations takes hold, the listener is smack dab in the middle of it. Staying true to its name, the track constricts further and further, until the ceaseless burrowing nearly instills a body high.
Operating in an alternate universe where Moby was a speedball enthusiast, „Go” is an overwhelming rave tirade, insinuating itself with muttered vocal clips and intently punctuated by the reccuring lead sample, while percussion creates a dizzying effect by virtue of its doppler-effect like dynamics.
„Come Out” is an arithmetic mean between warehouse and dub techno, driven forth by visceral vibrations in both the perc and lowend. An instrospective number , it provides a welcome mid-EP opportunity to catch one’s breath.
Borealis builds on the foundation of „Ever Decreasing Circles” with a copious serving of acid before finally climaxing into his trademark shadow trance euphoria.
Kommune1 masterfully bridges the gap between the two essential stompers, seemingly sounding like a megamix of the two.
Musical polymath Liar yet again steps in to supply the shameless banger, crafting a cohseive whole from aquatic, Drexciyan electro, an almost comical take on acid, mindless cathartic drumming and very nearly illegal sound design. „I know you’re different, cause I’m really normal”, it insists, with no small amount of irony. A nod to all all things warehouse, this „resex” bridges the gap between 90’s nostalgia and the forward-thinking histrionics of the original mix.

Since Type’s reissue of his Black Mill Tapes last year, PCA has had praise coming from all angles: whether it’s for his slick-but-sleazy, Carl Craigian lustre, the BoC-like melodic hooks, or his beautifully full bodied analogue production; he’s really hit a collective soft spot dead on. We were keen to hear him attempt something slightly more club-wise, and, et voila, we now have Superstitious Century. Opener “Vorticism” is a real peach, steeped in nostalgia for early ’90s UK house with the rosy-cheeked, wide-eyed essence of Smokebelch and classic AFX (it almost sounds like something off the first Analogue Bubblebath EP) distilled to a spine-tingling brew, and neatly contrasting with the subtle, slo-mo balearic build of “Zero Centre” to complete the A-side. Turn her over for the extended and seductively oily, oriental chug of “Wasted Evolution”, which has become a bit of an anthem at our monthly Haxan gatherings, and there’s the blissed out arpeggios of “End of all Eras” to bring us safely in to port, like some lost outtake off Boards of Canada’s Music Has the Right to Children.
