A Little Part Of Shade is about the part of shade that everyone has. It’s about the private garden; its quite the opposite of Niwa. It’s an inside garden. It can be bright or dark or in the middle. It can destroy or help youIf you weren’t convinced of Raphaël Rippertons compositional talent by his debut album, his sophomore release will do the trick. The LPs multiple programmed rhythms loosely mimic a more natural world and sees him work alongside a variety of artists including Hemlock Smith, the multi talented writer, graphist and photographer Van Hai, and Germain Umdenstock, whom features on the opening lead track A Little Part Of Shade; providing guitar melodies over his carefully constructed landscapes.Drawing on the collaborative talents from his own highly respected independent Perspectiv label Rippertons track Black Wall features the vocals of Masaya and succeeds in demanding an almost attentive listen. A Little Part Of Shade conjoins emotional forces with Rippertons fascinating use of soundscapes and contains smooth instrumentation throughout before closing with the achingly soulful Spike featuring Hemlock Smiths tender vocals.The thirteen musically broad and emotionally deep tracks that are included in A Little Part Of Shade reflect Rippertons approach to electronic music production, song writing attitude, and the sense of poignant delivery that extends far beyond the purview of techno clubs.

Seventeen years after it’s first release, Delsin is soon to hit the landmark catalog number of 100. Truth is, taking into account choice re-issues and specials such as the recent house series, there have already been scores more than 100 releases. Nevertheless, in that time the Dutch label has become synonymous with a wide range of timeless sounds from house to techno to dub to electronica, nurturing and championing some of the most respect names in the scene.

To mark the occasion, the label is to release five new various artist EPs throughout the rest of the year. Besides a special collector’s box edition, all EPs will be offered separately. All fifteen tracks will also be compiled onto one CD.

“After many different life cycles, with this compilation I try a bit to go back to the core of Delsin, to showcase more soulful but still raw techno sounds from a selection of key artists who best represent the label,” says label boss Marsel Delsin. “The tracks are all individual offerings but are tied together with the common themes of the label, and as a compilation will paint a nice overall picture.”

The five EPs will contain tracks from newbies and old favourites alike, including Sawlin and Delta Funktionen, John Beltran and Conforce, Redshape and Herva, Ross 154 and Mike Dehnert and more. The first – like all of them – features three tracks, one each from Gerry Read, Unbroken Dub and Claro Intelecto.

Its Manchester’s Claro Intelecto who goes first with ‘Fighting The Blind Man’, a typically widescreen and atmospheric cut with rich but grainy pads, warm techno pulses underneath and plenty of expertly design synths gurgling in the foreground.

New school house hero Gerry Read then offers a typically rough jam, ‘Granny Bag’. A melange of sandy hits, smeared synths and hunched kick drums, it might be one of his deepest cuts yet before Siberian producer Unbroken Dub then layers warm pads on rolling, buried deep kick drums and has all sorts of analogue sci-fi lines racing across their face.

As has done Delsin itself over the years, this special series of releases looks to join the dots between the past, present and future of techno.
