Always a man with an unstoppable flow of music coming out, Mr G is at it once again on his own Phoenix G imprint with another three slices of no-nonsense club tracks. “Do This?” is a minimal affair, keeping the drums submerged and letting a plastic keyboard line take centre stage, but things are much more tangible on “Playerz” which pumps with purpose on a solid beat track whilst playing a chord and a bass synth off each other, leaving ample room for the nagging vocal loop. “G Beatz 20” presents a more balanced argument, hitting on a more overtly house tone with a catchy riff, cheeky claps and a good old fashioned “come on!” sample. Built with understated poise and primed for the DJs, you can never go wrong with a Mr G 12″.

Having chosen to launch Huhta Home Studios by re-engaging with Jesper Dahlback on the dormant Brommage Dub project, Jean-Louis Huhta returns to the familiarly darkly lysergic focus of Dungeon Acid for Blight Acid, the labels second release. The Juno review team has been big fans of Dungeon Acid since stumbling on some shaky YouTube footage of him slaying a festival stage via the RVNG Intl twitter feed a few years ago and this double dose of Dungeon Acid retains the deep, dark and dirty style that Huhta intermittently transmits onto vinyl, with lead track “Blight Acid” particularly unnerving to the sensory processes. Jared Wilson fans will be all over how “The Way I Feel” slowly unfurls from relative calm into full blown acid thrusting madness.

Anthem builder Bashmore meets grubby soundbwoy Kowton on a nice ‘n rugged session for the former’s Broadwalk label. It’s a canny balance of their respective aesthetics; stubbly percussions dance against juicy bootied bass and soul burning vocal stabs bound to create some friction in the dance. ‘Mirror Song’ syncs scratchy hi-hats with ascending basslines and spiralling delays in hypnotic, driving form; ‘And What’ is much grimier, resetting rudimentary, ’04-style sublow to a bashier, skeletal house swing. The techno mix of ‘Mirror Song’ is our pick, a stripped down and thrumming slow techno banger somehow coming off like Soundhack in a foul mood.
