One of the best compliments you can pay a minimal techno producer is that they have an ability to make a lot with few elements. While Deepchord’s layered, textured sound could be described as maximal techno, on this release for Soma, its simplicity is its strength. In reality, not much happens over the course of the ten-minute plus “Luxury 1”, yet its dubby beats, sub-aquatic chords and occasional diversions into dreamy reveries is over before the listener realises it. “Luxury 2” is more dance floor-friendly, but despite this, the break beats are gentle and unassuming and the melodies subtle yet insidious. It makes for a straightforward but seductive combination.

The Demos EP sees the consistently impressive Going Good label follow killer 12″s from Moon B and Aquarian Foundation with a record from the anonymous Anom Vitruv, a producer whose combination of ambient tones and acidic, dubby techno comes with previous form on Taberbacle and Offseason. The Demos EP was originally released as a run of 50 cassettes on the Cleveland-based Tusco/Embassy Press label. The opportunity to bask in its hypnotic approach to techno should not be missed; across seven tracks it covers the kind of swirling beat haze of artists like Ital, the decayed ambient tones of Boards Of Canada, dubbed out acid and even fluttering electro-like rhythms. It may veer stylistically from genre to genre but it never does so without losing the charming nature of the producer’s deep sound. Don’t sleep!

Desolate Figures is the excellent second album from John Heckle which builds on the strong debut LP the Liverpudlian released on Mathematics some two years ago. Indeed it’s possible to view Heckle’s affiliation with Mathematics as a springboard to wider acclaim – Heckle’s debut EP earned him an honours at last year’s Qwartz Awards and he’s subsequently struck out with weighty slabs of hardware driven techno for Creme Organization, Signals, Apartment and Tabernacle Records. The latter label have become something of a second home for Heckle so it’s no surprise to see Desolate Figures issued through Tabernacle and the nine tracks come across as a very intense collection that demonstrate Heckle’s signature sound is becoming ever more impressive!
