Having made his name on Drumpoet Community way back in 2006, Quarion (AKA producer Yanneck Salvo) makes a welcome return to the acclaimed Swiss imprint. He’s in fine form, too, laying down a quartet of tracks that run the full gamut of floor-focused, late night deep house. There’s a clear UK garage influence to lead cut “Sunday Night”, whose attractive combination of wonky attack electronics and bold pianos make it sound like a classic US house take on the Paul Woolford classic “Erotic Discourse”. “Falling Down” is deep, sparse and bright, all picturesque electronics, woozy chords and classic vocal samples. There’s some excellent fuzzy 303-funk in the shape of “Mr Smith Does Acid”, while “Searching” is immersive, deep and utterly beguiling.

Mesmerizing slow industrial techno by Brooklyn duo Further Reductions consisting of Shawn O’Sullivan (Vapauteen) and Katie Rose.
Cititrax presents the full length LP by Brooklyn duo Further Reductions. Shawn O’Sullivan and Katie Rose formed Further Reductions in 2008 as an outlet for their shared passion of electronic dance music. O’Sullivan, known for his recent techno releases as Vapauteen on L.I.E.S., 400PPM on Avian and Civil Duty (with Beau Wanzer of Streetwalker) on The Corner has been quite active lately blurring the lines between techno and noise music. With Further Reductions, O’Sullivan’s rhythmic sensibility is fused with Rose’s pop leanings to create super lush and atmospheric tracks that work both on and off the dance floor. Informed by the sounds of classic techno and early house, they subtly substitute the structure of functional club music with a more primal absorption based in their unique collaboration. Seductive vocals coupled with organically evolving sequences create a complex narrative that penetrates the subconscious in a way that conventional club music rarely threatens to. Woodwork is an edition of 999 copies pressed on 160 gram clear vinyl with purple and silver splatter, presented in a high gloss printed LP jacket.

This collaboration with Mutual Dreaming’s Aurora Halal is the latest in the renaissance of Ital’s Lovers Rock imprint, which has also see excellent singles from himself and Earthen Sea recently. While Ital and Halal both individually make dance music that is psychedelic and driving, yet optimistic in tone, The Day After is marked out by its combination of Ital’s more brittle elements and Halal’s deeper, stranger textures. The delicate “Ascension” is filled with fluttering sci-fi textures that dive into hypnotic territory, while “Phase 2” delves into a nebulous haze. “The Thirst” comes across like a more psychedelic take on Robert Hood’s loop techno, while “The Day After” delivers a more moody, downbeat piece of techno reminiscent of Terrence Dixon. There are countless producers making strange takes on house and techno mining the influence of Detroit for inspiration, but none are doing it as respectfully or with as much originality as Ital & Halal.
