Taking their time to issue out carefully chosen gems from the world of minimal house music, Lick My Deck are back once again with a fine pair of stripped down floor workers from the ever-trusty Ion Ludwig. Both sides share the same kind of shuffled house groove, naturally played out on slender drum hits over un-ending stretches of repetition. Of the two “Polarized Color” lets the most freakiness in amongst its bones, as shapeless wraiths of fuzzy melodic tone drift into earshot intermittently. “No Man Can Be One Way You Should See” meanwhile stays more purely devoted to the beat with just the odd moment of distorted vocal lingering in the background.

A truly unique and authentic dialog between underground dance music and improvisational jazz, this EP from Rennie Foster, and friends, offers up a challenging, yet rewarding, listening experience aimed more at the heart than the intellect, yet somehow achieves sophistication anyway, much like more traditional jazz often does. The melancholy title track “Childish Things” and more aggressive and abstract acid house track “Traders” feature celebrated Canadian trumpet player Alfons Fear. Alfons’ late brother, Hans Fear, was a significant influence on Rennie’s early artistic life, and especially in “Childish Things” the joy of a child’s art can be felt alongside the sadness of tragedy and loss, perhaps the loss of a friend, or of youth, but still the beauty and love remain. The third song, “Grass Roots” is a heady, stoned mixture of jazz guitar, played by Rennie’s father in-law, and multi-disciplined musician, Lorin Goshinmon, fused with timeless, deep house production from an producer who understands the real legacy of the genre, beyond it’s current “buzz-word” status. Artwork for this release was created by Erik Von Kobra, the man behind the Wolf/Sheep Gallery and brand in Western Canada, a forward thinking artist who effortlessly blurs lines between fine art, graphic design and urban, street art, perfectly suited to Rennie’s raw and challenging music, both referential, sometimes to the point of homage, and yet impossibly unique.

Answer Code Request steps out of the Berghain shadows with a noirish debut album of ’90s-informed techno sound design for Ostgut Ton. ‘Til now, ACR’s made his presence felt with a small but perfectly formed haul of 12″s distinguished from the Berlin techno crowd by virtue of their UK-styled breakbeat and AI-era atmospheres. But where UK breakbeat techno might get over agitated or crazy, ACR curbs his enthusiasm with a typically stoic sort of composure indigenous to Berlin residents and their music, balancing both poles with a warm sense of Detroit melancholy, much like his label mate, Shed. By now every vinyl enthusiast must be familiar with the Appointment crew. Founded by hardware enthusiasts Marieu, EMG, John Swing and Lucretio in early 2010, the four artists have been unleashing occasional live jams whenever they could meet up in the same city to thrash them out. To celebrate the Appointment label’s tenth release, the team decided to issue their own individual versions of a single group production. Lucretio opts to transform it into stomping slowed-down gabber-rave, while Marieu takes an approach that’s half broken beat, half ghetto house. John Swing’s is possibly the most forthright of the lot, with a hip-house inspired version that slams hard, while EMG trades speed for sheer density, with a crunchy techno version that ploughs through all in its path.
