Full-length debut from the elusive Shinichi Atobe, known for an incredible 12” on Chain Reaction almost 15 years ago and never seen or heard from since. Audio mastered and cut by Matt Colton, Individually numbered edition of 600 copies for the world. Vinyl purchases come with a download of the full album plus 4 bonus tracks dropped into your account on Monday, October 27th* Shinichi Atobe has managed to stay off grid since he made an appearance on Basic Channel’s Chain Reaction imprint back in 2001. He delivered the second-to-last 12” on the label and then disappeared without a trace, leaving behind a solitary 12” that’s been selling for crazy money (theres a copy up on discogs at the moment for $600 – go figure) and a trail of speculation that has led some people to wonder whether the project was in fact the work of someone on the Basic Channel payroll. That killer Chain Reaction 12” has also been a longtime favourite of Demdike Stare, who have been trying to follow the trail and make contact with Atobe for some time, whomever he turned out to be. A lead from the Basic Channel office turned up an address in japan and – unbelievably – an album full of archival and new material that after a lot of hard work has been assembled and compiled by Demdike for this debut album. And what a weird and brilliant album it is – deployed with a slow-churn opener that sounds like a syruppy Actress track, before working through a brilliantly sharp and tactile 9 minute Piano House roller that sounds like DJ Sprinkles at his most bittersweet, before diving headlong into a heady, Vainqueur inspired droneworld. It’s a confounding album, full of odd little signatures that give the whole thing a timeless feel that’s completely detached from the zeitgeist – like a sound bubble from another era. This is only the second album release on Demdike Stare’s DDS imprint following on from Nate Young’s ’Regression Vol.3’ last year, who knows what they might turn up next.

Ahead of his Desolate Figures LP due on Tabernacle next month, John Heckle drops the brilliantly named “Back Alley Terminator” on the same label together with a clutch of similarly hard-hitting remixes. The original is a proper acid banger in true Heckle style, surrounded by blasts of euphoric ’80s synths and heavy set kicks. Andreas Gehm cleans up the surrounding interference for his remix, making the 303 line the centre of attention, Mick Wills turns in something on more of an EBM tip filled with the kind of rolling arpeggios you can see going down well at a World Unknown party, and Valanx does something else entirely with a shadowy rework filled with droning pads and sluggish industrial rhythms that sound like Einsturzende Neubauten at their most reflective.

The fourth in the Hot series sees Rushmore flirt with bass, techno and footwork – often within the same track. “Paladium” sets the tone for the release, with tight, syncopated drums and a stepping rhythm underscoring instant stabs. “Highroad” features similar rattling rhythms, but it sounds like Rushmore is channelling late 90s Dr Dre as the groove is infused with chilling strings. After that, things start to get chaotic; “NPG” features more of the same rattling rhythms and buzz-saw riffs, while “Silent Melody” returns to the smoked out, chilling sounds of “Highroad” – this time populated by ghostly voices – and “She Wants” finishes with brittle, glassy percussion and breathy vocal tones.

Slowly but surely Voodoo Down has built up a reputation as a deep house label you can trust. Its biggest release thus far was last year’s Unstable Phenomenon EP by October (featuring a Joey Anderson remix), while other 12″s have featured STL Anton Zap and L’estasi Dell’oro. Of the six records that Voodoo Down has released, the artist/entity 12 x 12 has featured on half, and now the label offers the enigmatic 12 x 12 their own solo release. All three tracks are experimentally edged with “Partial” the most out-there and broken down production, while “Typical Male Behaviour” sounds like the workings of a robotic forest and creepy crawlies that inhabit it. Lastly, the title track is synthy, sunny and spaced out. More original, dope jams from the Voodoo Down crew.
