Gracefully Force Consensus is an hour long split tape between PMM and Tuff Sherm. Two halves of the same whole or two independent artists? Or perhaps one works while the other sleeps?

On this cassette the artists trade tracks instead of the usual side each, PMM’s track titles appear to be lifted from a book on becoming a star while Tuff Sherm’s titles are all named after existing albums. Just how much is in the Tuff Sherm vault?

This tape is staggering in it’s breadth of sound, mood and approach: moments sound like disco 45’s having been given a sandpaper rubdown, other drumless works provide instant enlightenment. Tuff Sherm produces some of his most raw and rugged material so far taking the futuristic primitive approach to new levels of intensity by setting up huge mechanical automatons, lubricated with rain and sweat, that follow their own relentless path until a rainbow appears in the room. PMM resides in the chasm between music and non-music: gnarled tone poetry, metallic clangs and overblown keys.

Although only a little over a year old, the Appian Sounds label has already featured a killer selection of artists across its four records so far, with the likes of Eduardo De La Calle and Ethyl & Flori appearing thus far. This latest various artists 12″ is perhaps the label’s most impressive to date, with the fluid deep house sound of Natan H’s “VX407” and deep, underwater acid of Leonid’s “Starling Dance” both offering some of the label’s most accomplished productions to date. The flipside sees a pair of underground legends join the Appian Sounds fray, as New Jersey’s Joey Anderson contributes “Dormancy”, which takes things into expectedly hypnotic territory thanks to its silky rhythm and effervescent synths, while New York’s DJ Spider provides “Anticipate The Wolves”, an enjoyably clunky piece of techno filled with ominously swelling sonics.
