“If there’s one thing Jonas Kopp has proven over the last decade is that he can turn his hand to just about anything. Since debuting on Pfirter’s revered MindTrip Music back in 2006, the Buenos Aires native has managed to rack up a rich and compelling discography, coursing with ease through electronic music’s various forms. From warm Chicago house through to deep, dark and driving techno on labels like Deeply Rooted House, Stroboscopic Artefacts and more, Kopp’s hypnotic and heady sentiment has remained the red thread throughout, which has allowed him to flourish as one of techno’s more liberal dance floor purveyors. More recently, for Illian Tape he strayed out of the ring entirely to deliver two billowing, orchestral-sized ambient works; proof that there’s still plenty more to come from someone already so well-versed and dexterous in his craft. It’s high time then, that Jonas Kopp should present his first full-length effort. “Beyond The Hypnosis” weaves Kopp’s discursive repertoire into a single and concise narrative, covering both familiar ground and exploring new and spellbinding territories, along with just a hint of cosmic neo-retroism that makes this a welcomed edition to the Tresor catalogue. Despite having just a single release on the label so far, “X” featuring on DJ Hell’s 2013 Kern Vol.2 compilation, Kopp has been a firm fixture at the club since 2011. Jonas Kopp is the next in line of contemporary luminaries that Tresor proudly welcomes to the fold. “Beyond The Hypnosis” is a techno album as ambiguous and unrestrained as its astrological muse. This is Kopp at his most wayfaring with titles like “Seven” and “Green Square” showing off more of the producer’s flare for spacey, subaqueous music. There is of course plenty of floor-facing material as well, delivered with less stringent functionality than we’ve seen from him before. The perverted “Tau Ceti”, for example, or the basement-dwelling single “Red Plented” have been tarnished with the same brush as this album’s more dreamier moments, setting them apart from stand-along experiments to work collectively as a symbiotic and fully-fleshed whole.”

This release is a sign of how much of a global phenomenon underground electronic music is, as all of the contributors come from Mexico. Thomass Jackson kick-starts the release with “Bad Chat”, a malevolent, bass-heavy groove that is propelled over frenetic drum rolls. Eddie Mercury’s “Rim Cow Shot” inhabits a similar space, albeit one that is powered by grainy kick drums and razor-sharp percussive volleys. An interest in the darker side of electronic music must be a common theme for Mexican producers because both Mijo’s “Working Late” and Inigo Vontier’s “Lunatico” are led by eerie, warbling synths and throbbing basslines and Theus Mago’s “Ritmo Extraterrestre” is a wild acid extravaganza.

‘Fischerle’ is the work of Polish sound artist Matthew Wysocki. It would be a lazy injustice to describe the music here as simply being indebted to dub techno – whilst early basic channel influences are clearly prevalent, dub and techno rather form a basin for Fischerle to build his world within, a world in which the landscape veers from the rhythm and sound esque ‘Hidden Lake Club’, where paranoia seeps into the listeners consciousness with a quality reminiscent of the classic early Kode9 releases, to the completely off kilter Moritz Von Oswald drenched dub experiments of ‘Itch’, to the unlikely chaotic yet choral mix of a mass of pigeons on ‘Drama Workshop For Pigeons’. Miss at your peril.

The ever-prolific Truncate is at it once again on his home turf, demonstrating something of a pinnacle for the US approach to stripped and raw techno. “Track 1” slaps out the handclaps with gusto, but the synths that bubble in the background keep a certain dubwise calm to proceedings even with all the energy fed into the drums. “Track 2” takes a more dense approach, working in more intense flurries of percussion and keeping the synth elements finely chiselled and nervous, before “Track 3” brings a more playful side to the fore thanks to a hooky melody that will appeal to all Robert Hood fans out there.
