The latest buzzword making the rounds among the cultural cognoscenti: curation. And while we try to steer clear of hackneyed fads, this one almost slipped the net waxing lyrical about Modeselektor’s Modeselektion Vol. 03. Dodging the tried-and-tested approach of calling a few mates, bagging some shelved tunes, slapping it all together and unleashing the result on the unsuspecting masses, this one is actually all about the art of selection. About careful consideration, motivation, choice, process – that is, a pretty elaborate labour of love that hides intense effort under free-flowing, seamless sounds that sneak up on the ears to broaden our collective horizon.

Modeselektion Vol. 03 is a prime example of this painstaking process – boasting buckets of strictly exclusive tracks, once again hand-picked by Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary. By now, their Modeselektion hall of fame not only features the cute monkey covers and tracklists of Vol. 1 (2010) and Vol. 02 (2012), but als quite a few festival posters and AAA passes that highlight the concept’s live appeal – a. o. at Melt! Festival, UK’s The Warehouse Project and Bloc festival or Geneva’s Electron festival … Whether on vinyl or on stage, any Modeselektion “boils down to whatever we think is hot”, explains Gernot Bronsert. “We suffer from constant music overload, so we use Modeselektion to channel the best of these tunes for the outside world.”

More Modeselektion insights: Any selection is only as great as the distance between its most diverse elements – the greater, the better – but only if the compilation manages to shrink this gap down to nothing in a flash, convincing us that the gloriously heterogeneous mix couldn’t be any more cohesive. Also, any selection improves exponentially with the number of surprises and discoveries.

Composed in the confines of a Toronto studio, the expansive sound of End Scene is based on decades of VHS-addled film music, new wave jams, weirdo library records, acid house bangers, selected ambient works, and warehouse jackers. Crafted for modern listening from the analog echoes of cybernetic dreams, End Scene reflects a cohesive vision for the Jokers of the Scene’s intensely eclectic sensibility. This is headphone music made to move bodies, at once familiar and confounding fresh.

From the ominous intro, “Umbilical Chords,” through the slow house of “Channels For Success” and the gritty sheen of “Industrial Blonde,” this collection builds on the Jokers’ strengths and successes. But the duo, comprised of Linus Booth and Chris Macintyre, defy expectation at every turn; moving from the cavernous percussion of “Home Video Is Wherever I’m With You” to the widescreen ecstasy of “Stoned In Death Valley” and the breakneck pace of “Hunk Of Punk.” The ambient vibes of the Jokers’ 2012 ” Lovely Sort of Death” (originally released in two parts by Scion on limited 7” vinyl) close out the album as a digital-only bonus.

Looking to do more than simply get End Scene into stores, Booth and Macintyre recruited Adam Marshall’s acclaimed New Kanada imprint and NYC’s underground powerhouse Throne Of Blood to create a collaborative label, Throne Of Kanada, to help realize their full vision for End Scene. In addition to the LP, JOTS are releasing a special cassette-only set of “bonus tracks” with LA’s Mount Analog and are working with New York based musician and artist Sean Dack to create the album artwork as well as a series of short films to accompany each track. Keeping with the duo’s notion of “casting” a dream team to realize End Scene, mastering was done by the likeminded musical iconoclast James Savage, from Glasgow’s inimitable Naum Gabo. Everything is immaculately crafted, right down to the titles – plays on words that show that even when they’re doling out dark slabs of drone and heady techno, these are Jokers at heart.

senko, who has also appeared as slew52, slam52 and .slam: is the aarhus / denmark based project of daniel kosenko. the manipulation of pure data into sound (or ‘klang’, as he designates it) has now become his main focus.

kosenko’s musical intention has always been of an explorative and experimental embouchure and for this release, senko’s aim was to develop ‘a system’ with a semi-generative approach to harmonics, in which synths and sounds ‘resolve’ each others harmonic ideas, and ‘talk’ to each other ‘forcing the hand of chance’. the process of developing ‘the system’ was inspired by such wide ranging artists as john coltrane, györgy ligeti and psychic tv. artists who always found a perfect balance between improvisation and elaborate concepts.

the eight tracks of this album display a wide range of styles, approaches and spirits: contemporary electroacoustic textures and dark melodic drones as well as twisted abstract beats and filmic soundscapes with a ritualistic feel generate an aural kaleidoscope of moods between precipitance and relief. while listening to this release you will enter an unfolding labyrinth of semi-improvised drone-études – be prepared to stay there for quite a long time…

From Dutch duo Tangent comes their engaging sophomore effort ‘Transience’. An auditory montage of beatwork that blends subtly abrasive, mechanical rhythms with fascinating time signatures, scattered glitches, and nostalgic orchestral movements, that culminate into a caldron of latent kinetic energy and sophisticated electronic noir.

Recurrent tones cut through vast landscapes of spontaneous melodies and sparse beatworks creating a virtual universe of sounds and moods. Matter is formed and collapsed at once, while a new universe is formed from the ashes of the previous one. Static from lost transmissions projected through space eloquently expand and contract amidst floating particles of lullabies gently flowing through clouds of placid clamor.

Tangent navigates through changes in regularity, volume, and depth to create a texturally rich sound, blending harmony and dissonance into one moving landscape. Subtle movements that when taken together cover great distances. Carefully cultivated and positively enveloping, the sounds of ‘Transience’ seep into the subconscious and create macrocosms within inner space.

After a lengthy break C Mantle is back with a 6-track mini-album of coruscating idm. Femto Tudomány showcases his talent with these brilliantly alien-like sounds – melding and butchering them with his own wily methods of programming and sequencing. Shards of sound throb, slice and ultimately thrust his work forward, dragging layers of grind and electronic fuzz along for the ride, whether they’re complicit or not. It’s a rich aural experience that builds on the muscular techno of his 2012 EP Technē/Physis into something all and of itself. Sharp sonics from an underrated artist.

Somehow, sooner or later, the musical pathways in the musculotendinous receptors reach consciousness, embody the pretense of realism, and gleam the cybernetic facsimile. However the late dawn fades you just can’t describe the glimmer of such a sunlit matrix. With cerebral laden music influenced by the sci-fi épée emissions of the 80’s, Israel’s Random Value throws any eager ear tranquilly into the wishing wells while dolphins swim gallantly upon the open channels. When shoal divisions provide the subtle corridors situating the coral, the happy pockets open for the scuba diving grizzly’s as the greetings of the humpback await them. Having sung on for decades with their hands that still bleed, the chromatic aberrations are forged. The water sediments continue to sparkle welcomingly forever, oh so swiftly moving on the occultation of the agape… Add this very special record for Clean Error to your collection.

A new artist in the diametric. roster is delivering his debut album as Sons of Melancholia. Being a long time contributing artist in the techno scene, David Nizet, better known as Ozka, has put his heart and soul into this album. It is an album of sheer beauty and pure emotions and will enchant you with it’s honesty and rawness in places. The music is a mixture of harsh metallic percussive elements, abrasive sounds and breathtaking moody strings and pads. The clash of these elements makes this album so special and we at diametric. HQ believe that this will indeed become a classic electronic music album. For fans of early Autechre and 90’s IDM music such as Beaumont Hannant, Stasis, Likemind and B12 but also with a nod to nowadays artists such as Vatican Shadow for example.

The Acht LP is the debut album from Berlin based duo Vittoria Fleet. In 2011 the duo of Allan Shotter and Giada Zerbo self-released their debut EP Kissing Cousins. The EP quickly caught the attention of the blogisphere as well as the ears of n5MD head honcho Mike Cadoo. Two years in the making Acht LP shows the duo refining their tenet of aural and emotional contrast . Dark elastic experimental beatwork pulsate around Giada’s slithery emotive vocal delivery. IDM, bits of nostalgic trip-hop and some of the best sound design we’ve come across in some time all make the Acht LP a rewarding a treat for the ears. RLYL: Apparat, (Chris) Clark, Bjork. White and black vinyl LPs will be available on May 20th.
