**Cassette only edition of 200** The beguiling man-not-machine band, Elektro Guzzi deliver almost unfeasibly linear, precisely metronomic grooves made entirely on live instrumentation. In case you’re not au fait, the trio of Bernhard Breuer, Bernhard Hammer, and Jakob Schneidewind have released three perception-defying albums on Berlin’s techno-focussed Macro label before this one, honing a style of motorik groove played entirely in real-time without a computer in sight. For this tape they contribute two lengthy, rolling compositions. ‘Circle One’ is 28 minutes of strident, swinging dub techno-like flux expertly mixed with filigree spatial awareness. ‘Circle Two’ is slower, grumbling techno with rolling, swooping bassline and a fuzzy, deserted blues atmosphere, and the ‘Acid Bonus’ kicks up fizzing noise and heads-down, Afro-rhythmelodic 4/4 groove with Martian Millsian vibes. Perennial electronic troublemakers Mouse On Mars have been particularly active of late with their partnership with Modeselektor’s Monkeytown imprint, and on this latest EP it’s definitely not hard to hear why. There is a strong current of rave energy at work from the moment “Bakerman Is Breaking Bad” kicks off, as a flurry of acid and snapping electro drums get nasty with an old-skool electronica sensibility. “Cream Theme” has its own rose-tinted vision with dazzling chord stabs speaking of outdoor-party optimism as twisted through a juke-grinder. The title track too nods to tricky Chicago-born percussion and arrangement, although in this instance it sidles through a progressive spread of impulsive suites all crammed into five minutes, while “Migmy” says even more for footwork in a fraction of the time.

In December last year “Seeds in the Tide Volume 01” saw the light of the date and met with loads of interest. As promised we continue the series with the second installment in this collection of Rapoon rarities.
This time, apart from compilation tracks, “Seeds in the Tide” features three (yes, three) rare releases. The first one being “Live at Klanggalerie” tape from 2000; the other 2 being “Pell Mell” and “Ep Et Vee” EPs, all the three released in very small quantities. “Seeds in the Tide Volume 02” is therefore your chance to grab these titles, not on eBay (where they fetch enormous sums), but in one collection at a reasonable price. All in all, the second volume contains 150 minutes of pure sonic bliss with a quality sign, just like any Rapoon release is.
Once again, the tracks were faithfully restored by Maciej Bartkowiak. The paintings on the cover is by Mr. Robin Storey himself and the design duties were handled by Zoharum in-house designer Maciej Mehring. The whole production process was overseen by Michał Porwet.

Includes sleeve notes from director and composer** Death Waltz present the Justin Greaves (Crippled Black Phoenix) OST to a low budget satanic gangster flick, ‘The Devil’s Business’ (2011), written and directed by Sean Hogan. Marking the label’s most contemporary issue to date, Greaves’ score is accordingly pensive and creepy, mixing glassy ambient synth themes with dirge-like rock numbers all in a very low-key manner, sustaining an element of mystery and enigma by neatly eschewing any overblown gestures, save a few pieces hinting at Godspeed’s rousing orchestral post-rock work on the ’28 Days Later’ OST.

Pye Corner Audio’s darkling synthetic transmissions had been hovering under the radar for a couple of years before 2012’s Black Mill Tapes collection on Type brought them to a wider and grateful audience. Now, Martin Jenkins finds himself equally lauded by the likes of Sandwell District’s Juan Mendez and Minimal Wave’s Veronica Vasicka as by the UK hauntological set – a testament to the scope and adaptability of his stygian productions. Nonetheless, this album release feels right at home on Ghost Box, and it follows Jenkins’ contribution to the label’s 7″ Study Series last year. If The Black Mill Tapes focussed on the unheimlich but decidedly driving meta-techno side of the Pye sound, Sleep Games gives as much time to exploring its more abstract and oneiric peripheries. Nonetheless, rhythm is foregrounded throughout: from the woozy, tape-warped Boards of Canada-ism of ‘Sleep Games’, via the Xander Harris/Umberto-esque giallo-disco chug of ‘The Black Mill Video Tape’ through to the distant, dubby pulse of ‘Palais Spectres’ and the rolling toms of ‘Underneath The Dancefloor’. Eschewing the tweeness which has arguably softened the impact of recent Ghost Box releases, Sleep Games is refreshingly drug-hazed and zonked-out yet shark-eyed, minimalist and full of post-apocalyptic, cold-wave menace: you can more easily imagine this stuff soundtracking a car ride through the deserted industrial zones of coastal America than a ramble round the Belbury parish and its bucolic environs. At the same time, this feels like a Ghost Box release through and through: ‘Print Through’ is a radiophonic seance right from the grimoire of Eric Zann, ‘Deep End’ has the school textbook sci-fi sigh of classic Belbury Poly and ‘Yesterday’s Enemy’ the occult public service broadcasting vibe of early Advisory Circle.

Not a reissue, not a compilation, but something complete new. “To West and Blue” is 50th Rapoon album and 5th Rapoon release on Zoharum label. And this one will become a staple in our CD players for long time. 7 long, slowly evolving tracks appealing to your subconscious side. An album that is definitely not to everyone’s tastes. This one gradually grows on you until you are captivated by its haunting beauty. But there is an underlying uneasiness in it. A sort of clash between reality and a ghost world or a world that is long-gone. With choral voices hidden beneath layers of treated sounds, “To West and Blue” is a stand-out album among Rapoon numerous releases.
Robin Storey talks about this album: These pieces are about the area grew up in in the UK. A peninsula of land which stuck out into the Solway Firth. Surrounded by the sea when the tide was in and surrounded by endless mudflats when the tide was out. When the water covered the ground the line between the sea and the sky was almost non-existent. A diaphanous boundary. The sea came in from the West where the huge skies hung without end in a vault of blue.
The 7 tracks presented on “To West and Blue” were mastered by Maciej Bartkowiak. The cover is based on photos by Robin Storey and the design was handled by Maciej Mehring. The whole production process was overseen by Michał Porwet.
The CD is housed in gatefold sleeve in the vein of Japanese-style vinyl replica and is strictly limited to 500 copies.

Badge Of Honor arrives at the end of another prolific year for Dixon, who has ploughed his creative juices into the reduction label he started as an outlet for Population One material and issued records for Sino, Monique Musique, Polytone Recordings and Surface. This fifteen track set was apparently over a year in the making and is described by the label as “raw, all-encompassing techno cuts alongside some choice left-field experiments”. As the tracklisting suggests, Dixon has fully embraced Surface’s nautical aesthetic whilst the music is steadfastly Detroit techno delivered with his own distinct vision.
