Enigmatic California duo German Army creates often-portentous music illuminated by fading cultural voices and barren, shifting lands. Following a dizzying array of tapes, CDs and LPs in the last three years, the first four GeAr cassettes of 2014 share broader musical approaches. And collectively, they suggest a system of conceptual continuity that’s just begging to be deciphered with a Walkman and a few batteries. Our humble release of the quartet, “Tassili Plateau,” feels like the keystone of them all, music and message(s?) slowly coming into focus. Short, taut songs, visited by Bollywood dervishes with freckles of exotica, buttressed by fried drum machines lifted from the quarterdeck of Captain (Richard H) Kirk himself, and musically expanded to allow for moments of warmth and redemption, this might be the best outing by German Army yet. Returning to PAN for the first time since 2011’s 19-minute sound piece How Wheeling Feels When The Ground Walks Away, New York-based conceptual artist James Hoff presents Blaster. Based around an intriguing concept to say the least, Blaster is described as a “document of his explorations of computer viruses as agents within the composition process,” using the computer virus of the same name to “infect” 808 rhythms and construct all-new shapes out of the resulting audio mulch. As you might expect from such a concept, the resulting audio is extreme to say the least; glitchy, abrasive and wildly unpredictable, each of the eight tracks splutter and misfire like a jammed machine gun. While PAN’s recently released Miseri Lares from Valerio Tricoli showed the label’s more delicate experimental side, Blaster is very much PAN in full on sonic assault mode.

Chase Dobson is a Denver based musician who focuses foremost on texture and atmosphere. Utilizing acoustic instruments, synthesizers and an array of digital processes, his output is difficult to pigeonhole. One is equally as likely to hear serene looping ambient work as they are glacially paced post-metal or dubby minimal techno. Dobson’s musical project “c.db.sn” has embraced this same philosophy of texture and atmosphere. While initially rooted in IDM, c.db.sn has branched out to encompass a number of genres while maintaining an aesthetic central to all of Dobson’s material. Chase Dobson has released material on Tympanik Audio, Hymen Records, Crime League, Component Recordings and Denver’s Plastic Sound Supply.
