KS French either has a ridiculously large archive of edits, or he works unfeasibly fast. Either way, the Paris-based producer has put out a staggering amount of music this year; unbelievably, Super Groove V2 is his 31st EP of 2014. Happily, his knack for creating floor-friendly edits has not deserted him. The expansive, bass-heavy Curtis Mayfield rub “Tuerie II” is particularly potent, while there’s a sweaty, low-slung sensuality to the head-nodding grooves and electric vocals of “Hot Night Tool”. Best of all, though, is “Touch Me”, a filter-heavy disco-house rework of Space classic “Carry On, Turn Me On”. It’s subtly done, but sounds like a guaranteed floor-filler.

Vancouver’s Darren Woodhead (aka Woodhead) claims to be a “West (Canadian) coast institution”. We can’t vouch for that, but we do know that he switched from touring in many popular punk bands, and this shift to disco has so far been very successful indeed. His latest offering, The Music EP, features four new tunes to get your chops round: the slo-mo funked-up house of “The Music”, the party-fuelled clap-along “On The Floor”, the smooth and lush boogie bomb “Electricity” and finally the contemplative, emotional funk of “Crazy Motion”.

At first glance Noo may be a new name, but without looking into who is behind this self titled EP for the Optimo Music label you get the sense there is a certain pedigree from listening to the music alone. It turns out Noo is the new project from Daze Dasen and Sami Liuski, whose respective work as Plastique De Reve and Bangkok Impact / Putsch ’79 has featured on amongst other labels Death From Abroad, IDJ, Creme and Clone. Together as Noo they are granted the honour of releasing the first Optimo Music Disco Plate with two cuts of sublime Modern Disco (not Nu Disco as the label themselves are at pains to point out) Heavy on luscious string heavy musicality and swooping arrangements, both “The First Night” and “No More” seem destined to become record box mainstays for any selectors that play disco.

Hot on the heels of Alkalino’s From The Vaults EP comes a second selection of forgotten and overlooked gems from the Portuguese producer’s seemingly bulging archives. While the first volume focused entirely on his original productions – mostly in a deep house vein – this expansive, 11-track LP focuses more on his disco-leaning work. In practice, that means a range of tracks – both re-edits and remixes- that variously join the dots between disco, electrofunk, soul, funk and deep house. There are naturally plenty of previously unheard gems, from the raw synths and proto-house flex of “Get On Down” rework “U Feel It Thru” and the spiraling, oddball disco-funk of “Guitars”, to the baggy Balearic flex of “James Brown” (a tasteful and groovy edit of TomTom Club’s “Genius of Love”).
