Given the soul-soaked and generally far-sighted nature of techno veteran Fabrice Lig’s music, it’s unsurprising to see him popping up on Carl Craig’s esteemed Planet E label. Galactic Soul Odyssey more than lives up to its title, too, largely eschewing dancefloor techno rhythms in favour of tracks that bristle with the positivity of P-funk, boogie, broken beat and high class synth-pop (think rubbery slap bass, kaleidoscopic synths, ’80s soul vocals and bouncy rhythms). It’s a deliciously positive set, all told, with just the right balance between studied retro-futurism and effortlessly melodious atmosphere. Certainly, it’s something of a triumph – an accessible romp with enough musical depth to please even the choosiest of heads.

Running Back welcome a mysterious stranger to their table for their 51st (!) release, in the form of the Rayban wearing, tropical shirted Roy Comanchero. This smooth operator doesn’t do laptops, instead touring the pawn shops and thrift markets of the world in search of knackered Jomox drum machines and wonky Junos. “Lucid Memory” kicks the EP off in thrusting form, hitting that sweet spot between proto house and Italo again and again with its bubbling bassline and snapping drums. Roy tops that killer rhythm section with hair raising sequences and spacey pads as he moves the party from the beach bar to the moon room. “Pugs Life” takes a step away from proto-house and jumps straight into the high gloss camp of the Italo world. Driving basslines, high octane synths and some of those swirling fills Todd Terje likes to rock ensure the floor’s gonna be rocking all night. On the flip Roy takes us into Italian house territory with “The Delete Of Society”, a hypnotic groover that draws you into its world of tuned synth vox, rattling percussion and sparkling melodies. Already a hit with me and the Pigeon in the Piccadilly office, this one’s gonna work the Mancunian floors for the foreseeable. Roy brings the EP to a close with the coastal night drive of “New Horizon”, a cinematic and melodic synth workout worthy of the great Jan Hammer, which could bring a tear from a glass eye. Whoever he is, Roy Comanchero is one to watch!

A long and distinguished recording career for the always faithful Norm Talley has been lacking something Tsuba shapes until now, so kudos to Kev Griffiths for coaxing three drops of powerfully deep and danceable house from the Westside Detroiter. Each track here offers a different mood with A-side cut “Mid-Nite Madd-Ness” the peak time burner with classically Detroit house styled cymbal clashes cuing breakdowns, while vamping chords ascend and descend. “Holiday” is the warmer summer house jam with woozy Rhodes on loop, while “One Track Mind” is deep and rhythmic with a sultry vocal to boot.
